Posts: 10973 From: Lawton, OK, USA Registered: Apr 2001 posted 01-26-2006 10:58 PM                     Just to see what the fuss is about regarding MySpace, I just posted my profile. Friend me up so that page doesn't seem so pathetic. Maybe when I get some time I can dress up the page just a little. There seems to be a proliferation of other pages social networking sites like this. One that seems fairly interesting is Yelp! It's main purpose is a 'blog for people to post reviews about all sorts of stores, restaurants, clubs, movie theaters, etc. Every reviewer has his/her profile. The somewhat unique angle on this, if you're using it to find new friends or dating interests, is you can get a better idea about a person's likes or dislikes (and your potential compatibility with that person) based on his/her reviews. The downside of Yelp is it tends to only work best in cities with a large amount of participation. If you live in a smaller city you could wind up being one of very few people posting any reviews. Friendster and Tribe are now adding the reviews idea.  |  IP: Logged Joe Redifer You need a beating today Posts: 12859 From: Denver, Colorado Registered: May 99 posted 01-26-2006 11:35 PM                        Bobby, you have several mistakes on your MySpace page that must be corrected IMMEDIATELY! -Your picture is not one of you making a weird face but instead you looking directly at the camera. Normal, sane pictures are not allowed. A popular option is the taking-a-picture-of-yourself-in-the-mirror technique. People LOVE to do this because they can not figure out the timers on their cameras. -It does not seem Emo. You need to be Emo to be on MySpace. Talk about only the crappy things in your life. -You don't have music playing and a whole bunch of "flair". You need to make sure that you totally bog down the browser of any unfortunate soul who visits. You also need to have text that overlaps onto images and generally make sure that it is very diffcult to read the page. There are more mistakes I'm sure. But fix these first if you want to be popular on MySpace. Usually I spend just about all my creative energy on my day job. Any left over gets spent on some freelance stuff. I do need to take more time out for myself to make some personal projects. 2. It's not really clear how one can customize one's own page. As far as I can tell, you have to upload images elsewhere (on other websites) and then just HTML link to them. Not a very clean approach. I prefer to upload images locally to the same web server. It keeps broken links down to a minimum. I'll probably just post some artistic stuff in my Photos gallery. If anything, I may do a little different stuff to the type via CSS, but it seems to look okay for now. In the few times I've messed around with MySpace, it seems to be quite a lot more active than Tribe or Friendster. Lately, Tribe has really been in a state of decline, but I check on a number of graphics related discussions there from time to time. Friendster has been a big fat goose egg. Damn that thing runs slooooowwwww. I think it must originate from the Phillipines or something. By comparison, my MySpace profile has already been viewed a bunch of times and I've received notes from people I don't even know hundreds or even thousands of miles away. Got a couple notes from some pretty ladies nearby though. There are apparently many versions, and a Google search would reveal the links. As for adding graphics and whatnot to the main profile, I just host them all on my own website and link via html. No broken links there, though ... I know what I'm loading on my own site. I'm not sure if either of them are evil , but Tom certainly doesn't deserve to be on my Friends list simply out of default. I mean, I've never received a single comment or message from him!
