I knew John personally quite well, on a professional level. We met for the first time at ShoWest 2003 but we had already been in contact via email then for a while. John generously helped me with advice and recommendations before and after I came to the US from Germany.
Over the next years, we met a number of times at ShoWest, on seminars and other occasions, and he always had time to inquire about how my American adventure was developing and chat a little.
The last time we met in person was at ShoWest last year. I was walking into one of the vendor parties just as he was heading out, but he came back in to chat for a while with me. I remember he looked great and was full of energy, the news just a few months later that he had fallen so seriously ill came as a real shock.
At the film-tech drink 2003, we downed quite a few Maartinis and some wild mix drinks John improvised and served, and then John and me took a taxi from Bally's which made an U-turn and dropped us off at the Boardwalk Hotel across the street...which is why it says "where is the Boardwalk Hotel" above my picture...fun times. There are some pictures and a video of that occasion in the Pictures section here.
It was deeply saddening to read the news about his illness here during the last year, but I think people who left us should be remembered as they were at the height of life and for their achievements and the positive impact they had on others, so I watched that video and remembered John as he was when I knew him. I remember gratefully how generous he was towards me, as to many others, in his constant quest to educate and help fellow professionals in the cinema industry. The fact that he was so widely known and respected in the industry speaks for itself.
RIP
