The Wichita Mountains Wildlife Refuge (just north of Fort Sill) is home to over 500 wild Texas Longhorn cattle from the original blood line. The refuge is also home to hundreds of buffalo, elk and other animals that roam freely. And that sometimes means encountering them on the highways. I took the photo above this past Thursday (May 31). I was hanging out of a window snapping away furiously with my Canon D-SLR and a 70-200mm f/2.8L lens -just waiting for a car to collide with the bull or for the bull to quit not giving a shit and gouge the hell out of a vehicle with his left horn. When my wife and I were in Yellowstone National Park a few years ago, at one point we wound up in a bison jam, sharing the road with 80 or 100 bison. They're taller than your car and can knock it over without even breathing hard. All you can do is inch along with them until you get a chance to get out. We were stuck in the jam for about 90 minutes. The car was getting jostled back and forth, but no dents, amazingly. It was unnerving, but a fun adventure. (My wife was a little skeered, though!)
