Why don't people re-enact D-Day battles? Why Civil War? And who would lower themselves to portraying the South (who were completely wrong and evil)? How do you determine if a cannonball hits someone? You'd have to measure where it would bounce and everything. I was mainly into it because my dad was into it. But you do end up with some reall cool scenes like that. So can't complain too much. There are also revolutionary reenacemtent, but none around here. Posts: 10973 From: Lawton, OK, USA Registered: Apr 2001 posted 06-21-2008 12:27 AM                     When I was in high school my family attended a reenactment of the Battle of Manassas (near Manassas, Virginia -what some call the Battle of Bull Run). In one respect it does seem a little silly, sort of like Star Trek "Trekkers/Trekkies" or people into a lot of Medieval Viking stuff at Renaissance festivals. OTOH, I see the American Civil War as by far the very worst period in the history of this country. But it is a terrible period that our country survived and grew stronger out of the aftermath. It's encouraging to see a lot of people trying to keep that history alive, even if they're doing something that some people will see as being goofy. I think our nation is in serious need of a wake-up call. So many of our citizens don't know squat about this country's history. It seems funny when it's shown in a Jay Leno bit on The Tonight Show. But ultimately it's damned sad. We've all heard the saying "those who don't know their history are doomed to repeat it." Even there I don't think the average American understands the warning. So in one sense people are doing this to preserve history and in another, a sizeable portion is doing it to actually divide themselves from the rest of us. Heck, even when I worked in Seattle this guy was box office a regular (who had a thick Southern accent) noticed the guy before him paid in a $50 and made sure to give me a bigger bill to get it as change. As he put it, he just loved the idea of having a Yankee like Grant sitting under his butt (in his wallet). [edit]Of course I'm not remotely implying that all are like that.[/edit] 2) Obviously, the Tonight Show bit only shows the people who answered the questions wrong. Here's a conversation that happened in class: Her: Class, who won the Battle of Gettysburg. Me: The North Her: Shouldn't you change that? I turn to my best friend. We both give each other a strange look that says "WTF is she smoking?" Both of us emphatically say "No!" in unison and she only corrects herself after we pull out the textbook showing a civil war map with battles color-coded for which side won and a book on the battle (since said buddy was writing a paper for that class on that particular battle).  |  IP: Logged Charles Greenlee Jedi Master Film Handler Posts: 801 From: Savannah, Ga, U.S. Registered: Jun 2006 posted 06-21-2008 02:58 AM                        No one did, yet everyone did. The war costs us dearly, in many ways, so no one won. But it also caused alot of reforms to come about. But strategically, the Union won. And no, I don't reenact having slaves. On the other hand, I am grateful for their place in our (every american's) history. The country could not have been built with out them, not matter how evil the institution may have been. As far as reenactors? You'll not find a closer comradery, from all reenactors. North and south alike. Yeah, you have your redneck hicks, but you also have doctors and lawyers and all kinds of people. They get together and put on a good show. There's something that can be said about the experience. Smelling the campfires, the spent powder, seeing the smoke of battle hanging in the air, feeling the pounding of the cannon. It's easy to get pumped. I don't know but a bunch of grown men walking around waving confederate flags makes me uncomfortable. It's also true that a lot of studies often shown in one news report after another reveal that a great deal of Americans are very deficient in their knowledge of history, geography and a lot of other things. Jay Leno's bit makes it funny. The hard news reports just make it sad.  |  IP: Logged
