No one did, yet everyone did. The war costs us dearly, in many ways, so no one won. But it also caused alot of reforms to come about. But strategically, the Union won. And no, I don't reenact having slaves. On the other hand, I am grateful for their place in our (every american's) history. The country could not have been built with out them, not matter how evil the institution may have been.
As far as reenactors? You'll not find a closer comradery, from all reenactors. North and south alike. Yeah, you have your redneck hicks, but you also have doctors and lawyers and all kinds of people. They get together and put on a good show. There's something that can be said about the experience. Smelling the campfires, the spent powder, seeing the smoke of battle hanging in the air, feeling the pounding of the cannon. It's easy to get pumped. No matter whether you're in blue, grey, or whatever.
