An aero engineer responded the explanation that with the gate up a bubble of stagnant air slowly circulates around the bed of the truck. When air approaches the truck it sees that bubble as part of the truck and appears to the air that there is cover over the bed. With the gate down air approaching the truck sees a truck with a flat bed on the back of a tall cab which is a very non aerodynamic shape with a large drag. Tests made in a wind tunnel for Ford. Richard, it's too bad you didn't opt for the larger inline 5. Easiest way to cut drag is to put a shell on that thing - a shell that has the same height as the roofline of the cab..then add a small wing to the tail edge of the shell to deflect the airflow downward to fill in the vacuum that is created when a vertical surface is in a forward motion....doing the best in having airflow going over a teardrop for least resistance. ...and an adjustable airdam under the front valance can help also in reducing drag so that the airflow under a vehicle is slower than the airflow going over the top of it, which will push the vehicle down to the ground instead of wanting to lift the vehicle upward creating large amounts of drag..  |  IP: Logged Gerard S. You gain load space for rolls of link fencing, lumber, drywall, shrubs & lawnmowers, but lose space for passengers. Such a vehicle would be a loser in metropolitan areas, where all trucks are forbidden on parkways--as on Long Island, where the main routes East/West, Northern State & Southern State Parkways, for example, are strictly off limits. Vans are definately okay down here as many are used as commuter vans though those without windows normally have "truck" tags. I've never seen any Park Police pull over someone for having a pick up on the parkway... That said, New York does tend to have their own set of rules however in 2000, Light-Duty Pick Up trucks were allowed to get passenger plates and thus may use New York parkways.
