nice thing about skinney tires is that they can go through mud and snow and hit the hardpan layer for traction, not float above just to sit there and spin down to the hardpan layer.
But, the wide profile ones are great for stability purposes - for cornering and weight distribution especially with vehicles of high center of gravity - being of the wider footprint.
With Rick's tires, they'e definitely made for some serious off roading with the deep and wide angled lugs to bite into the mud and snow and help in any form of needed traction, whereas Mark's tires are for all around on/off-road usage. Yet, I bet tht Rick's tires howl like the banshee on asphalt or concrete pavement.
Granted, more agressive groovework in the case of the tire to bite more than Rick's tires will do,but will fill up quicker with the mud and snow since there is hardly any large exit lanes in the tread for that junk to head out in a hurry.
Mark, did you have your tires siped? (Good set anywho - BF GOODRICH TA's .. prob 255R60/16's on there) You oughta have them done at your local Les Schwab and you'll notice the difference when you're driving the I-15 corridor down into SLC. Siping tires will make them run cooler, have tons more bite in the tread for gripping, plus make them run tons cooler..
