..like back in the mid 70's - the "Scooby-Doo" Van .. every kid had to have a "Chevy Van" ... Ford or Dodge vans were a distant second to a Chevy Van ..

Monte mentioned the "Scooby-Doo Mystery Machine". There was someone in Tucson who actually built an authentic "Mystery Machine" and was driving it around town. Have not seen it in a while, though.

I can turn Richard's truck into a real powerhouse by converting it to small block Ford!

I don't think I would have changed out the head unit on a brand new GM vehicle. Don't you get one free year of service with On-Star? Changing the head unit would eliminate that wouldn't it? Was the original head unit that bad?

Not when On-Star isn't a standard option in the vehicle. It was a basic head unit. Did it's job, but no Cd Player

No CD player? I wasn't even aware that you can get a vehicle without a CD player anymore. I know that the manuals for the three 4 or less year old Ford's we have make no mention of radios without a CD player.

Well, I think that Badge on the front says VW.... If thats the case you may be lucky to be able to find a dealer to take it to for repair in the next year as VW is giving serious consideration to pulling out of the US... My past VW experiences I've always found VW dealers to be absolute assholes.

Well said Mark. I have an acquaintance who had a Beetle replaced under the lemon law and is in the process of having the replacement replaced similarly. He says than when the next one arrives it'll be sold immediately.

I read the link---they don't have any idea that their cars are being beat out in quality by everybody. If VWs are selling in Europe either the buyers there don't know any better or the Vws sold there are a hell of a lot better than the crap they're sending here.

Over the years many Euro mfgrs have pulled out of the U.S. market--Rover in the late '60s, Renault, Peugeot, Fiat because the products couldn't cut it here.

Actually, the workaround on that tax was to send the trucks over "unassembled" (they flipped the beds over on the frame and attached them here.)

The chicken tax had exactly one adverse effect to pickups...VW's Transporter (the VW Bus pickup version) stopped being sold here because the whole thing was unibody, and they couldn't do that trick with it.

You could buy them in Canada all they way up to the end of the Vanagon's run, but you could no longer buy them here.

Well, we just have to hope that the Chineese don't end up with Land Rover.... Nanjing Auto Corp has already bought Power Train Limited which was the maker of the very technologically advanced KV-6 Land Rover Freeelander Engine. KV-6 Engine

Anyone seen the automotive product that these Chinese are putting together lately?

One company wants to come to the States (Geely Motors and a lot of dealers are waiting for the green light to sell this brand) and it just might make a dent in the automotive import market with the quality, economical attributes and price that these vehicles are entrusted with...but no large SUV/LandRover items so far...just subcompact vehicles.

The same trend happened with the Koren manufacturers in the last ten years.

Hyundai and Kia have both gained quite a bit of business with their long factory warranties and low prices. Although they might not be of the highest quality, the fit and finish of the two past Hyundai vehicles I've owned was much better than the GM vehicles that I swear by. I have never had to take either one of those cars back to the dealership for anything, and I racked up plenty of miles on them doing service in 3 states.

They don't hold their value worth a sh*t, but I feel I have gotten my money's worth out of them.

Honda and Toyota reliability can't be disputed though..........

I agree somewhat but having been there already but I would never own another Korean vehicle again. The parts will kill you when it does go out of warranty.... and be sure never to buy a used one! I had a KIA Sportage.... I beat the crap out of it in the desert and it still looked decent when I got rid of it... probably more because of the mild climate out here than it was a well built car. It was not without its problems and I could put a long list here. The biggest problem I have with these vehicles is the handling factor and how that correlates into safety. I could care less how bad the car gets damaged in a front end collision at 30 mph... but what about when it rolls over? Even with the airbags and side collision beams you'd probably be crushed or end up with a broken neck or back in many of these cars. My biggest gripe with the KIA was that it was an absolute dog on gravel roads.... never again!
