I went to a bar after work to get a beer, it was a nightmare trying to get served. The bar wasn't that busy but trying to get in to get a drink was a nightmare. I was waiting in line behind a group of 4 guys who had all ordered beers, they were served but then decided to just stand there drinking instead of moving out of the way, even with a line of people wanting to get served forming behind them. Move out the damn way!. You wouldn't go into Macdonald's order food and then stand at the counter to eat your meal, you pay for you food then go find a table. You wouldn't do it at a movie theatre either, you wouldn't order popcorn and nacho's and then stand and eat them at the counter. So why do people think this is ok behaviour when buying alcahol at a bar? One time I was at a crowded bar in Missoula, MT with my friends Darren and Julie. I went up to get us a round of drinks and had no trouble getting TO the bar, but the bartenders (all male) were totally ignoring me, even though I was standing there with obvious money in hand. After about 10 minutes of trying to catch somebody's eye, I got fed up, went back and asked Julie (who was and is super hot) to get our drinks for us. Literally. I was restocking beer coolers and tapping kegs when I was 10 years old. No joke. Assuming the beertender is not a jizzbag like Mike's the solution is easy. Walk right up behind, money in hand, and get the beertender's attention. Order your drinks and... pardon me... elbow your way right in to pick up your stuff. Pay for it, leave a good tip and score bonus points if you can spill some beer on the assholes blocking the bar. A good bartender will pull four or five stools from one end of the bar before the rush hour starts just to clear a lane for people to come up and order. When people try to linger he'll tell them to move aside so others can order. Unless the assholes blocking the lane are tipping with Benjamins, it is the bartender's best interest to keep that lane clear so he can score more tips. There's just a certain way to behave in a bar, especially when customers are three deep at the rail. People who don't follow the rules deserve to be elbowed aside.
