So, Christmas should be taken off the list, too. Then, since Thanksgiving is racially insensitive to American Indians, that should be taken off the list. If that's the case, then, the whole sign should be taken down. It really wouldn't be necessary, anymore. Would it? I don't know whether this is more true than the idea of retailers "going into the black" on this day, but it makes sense. The other point in the article was that the busiest shopping days are actually the 4 weekend days preceding Christmas Day (or December 23 if Christmas is on a weekend. I still call it "the day after Thanksgiving" which I've called it since I learned about the calendar and stuff. Here is the explanation from Wikipedia, which sounds pretty good to me: quote: The day's name originated in Philadelphia, PA, where it originally was used to describe the heavy and disruptive pedestrian and vehicle traffic that would occur on the day after Thanksgiving. Use of the term started before 1961 and began to see broader use outside Philadelphia around 1975. Later an alternative explanation was made: that retailers traditionally operated at a financial loss ("in the red") from January through November, and "Black Friday" indicates the point at which retailers begin to turn a profit, or "in the black". Here in small town USA, the day after Thanksgiving is one of the slower days of the year because everybody heads out of town to shop with the masses. In the heyday of our electronics/music business, things would get steadily busier the closer we got to Christmas with the last week being positively chaotic. We're showing Lawrence of Arabia tonight, and running a couple of reels to test just now reminded me of the fact that the characters of middle-eastern extraction are referred to as "wogs" by the British officers frequently, throughout the movie. I get the impression that this term was never really used in US English, but in British English it's up there with the n-word on the political incorrectness stakes, so much so that I'm surprised that the film is still allowed to be shown in the UK - at least, without a disclaimer title card at the start. As for Black Friday, when I first heard the term I was a bit confused.
