Believe it or not, VHS is now the subject of nostalgia and cultism among a small subculture.
Towards the end of my time at the American Cinematheque, I had the, erm, privilege, of officiating in the booth at a "Weirdathon," which roughly translates as an all-night show of the worst movies of the 1970s and '80s. One of these masterpieces was Matilda (1978), of which the only surviving copy that the programmers could find was an ex-rental VHS tape.
Not wanting to risk old 1970s cheap tape stock from sticking, jamming, dropping out, etc., during a show, I captured it and DCP-ized it. Before rendering, I deinterlaced the picture, applied a little light touch noise reduction to the linear audio track to get rid of some of the hiss, and edited out the worst dropouts. In short, I improved the quality of the eventual technical presentation, from f***ing abysmal to just abysmal.
In the interests of full disclosure, the screening was advertised and listed on our website as being from VHS. In the event, we actually got a complaint that it looked "too good" for VHS, and that we shouldn't have edited out the trailers, logos, adverts and anti-piracy snipes from the front of the tape, because they add authentic atmosphere to the presentation.

Tesla electric car charging points in the lot of a Starbucks just off the 5 freeway in Buttonwillow, CA.
I stopped to refuel (with both coffee for me and 87-grade for my low-tech, manual transmission Honda Fit) en route to a service call in northern California earlier today. When I saw these, I thought WTF?! This place is literally in the middle of rural nowhere, by the side of a freeway. Look 50 yards beyond the strip mall by the freeway, and it's mountains on one side and desert on the other.
However, looking at a map, this is almost exactly the halfway point between LA and the Bay Area. If you have a 200-mile range Tesla and you need to move it between Silicon Valley and SoCal, this is basically the perfect place to recharge, which I'm guessing is why these charging points were installed here.
There's just one tinsy problem, though: any millionaire in a status symbol Tesla is going to have to have to make that skinny vanilla latte last a very long time while their car recharges. As for me, three minutes at the gas station across the street had me all set for the next 450 miles (and ass raped by Jerry Brown in the process, but that's OT for this forum).
