Movie credits are ridiculous.

In the film days when there were never enough prints, I thought each theatre could have a one-sheet sized poster with all the credits on it. That way the stuidos could use all the saved film to make more prints, and people would have no reason to bitch if they "missed" that vital music credit they were hoping to see.

People really only care about three things in the credits:

- Where it was filmed
- Who played the characters
- Who sang the songs

The rest is mostly just feeding egos.

Don't forget...the credits are also sometimes used in lieu of pay or as much pay. The credit also is a verification of work on a particular project for a resume.

That said, I don't hold with the group that consider credits as part of the movie or it being rude to exit during them anymore than I find a bibliography required reading for a book. If I'm interested then yes, it is great to have the information there.

Well, there are also Easter Eggs, wacky credits and typos.
And sometimes, they have friends who worked on the film.

Since most of the audience has their cell phones out by then anyway, they should just project a giant bar code that will like to the credits that they can watch on their phones at their convenience [Wink]

I seem to remember being told that long credit crawls began in the late '70s / early '80s, when the IATSE locals in Hollywood that represent production and post workers changed their rules, such that an on-screen credit was needed to established that you'd worked on a movie for seniority purposes. So hundreds of workers on a film who wouldn't previously have had an on-screen credit got one.

Still, there has been credit creep on this ever since: when I first started working in this business (late '80s), a credit crawl longer than 3-4 minutes was very unusual. Within a decade, the average seemed to have grown to 5-7 minutes. On a major blockbuster now, the credit crawl can occasionally bust 10. I'm surprised that NATO and other theater owners' representatives haven't tried to push back against this (in the same way that, say, airlines apply pressure on airports that impose long ground delays for takeoff permission), because over the course of a whole screening week, that takes an auditorium out of use for a significant length of time and prevents a business asset from earning revenue.

I remember the amazement expressed at the credits for Superman being a record-breaking seven minutes, which now seems rather quaint.

In the last year it seems to have gotten much worse. Rather than 8-10 minutes being a rare exception, it seems to be more the rule now.

Here's what we have for recent movies
- Legend of Tarzan - 8min
- Jason Bourne - 10min
- Star Trek Beyond - 10min
- Ice Age: Collision Course - 10min
- Suicide Squad - 10min
- Ghostbusters - 7min
- The BFG - 8min
- Finding Dory - 10min
- The Shallows - 6min (movies like this used to be 3-4 min)
- Warcraft - 9min

Then you have lights out at 4 minutes and Bad Moms at 5 minutes.

One good thing is studios are starting to give the time for the first credits and the start of the credit crawl.
