The road layout of central London was put there by the Romans and a lot of it hasn't changed much since. It was designed with horse-drawn and slave-drawn carriages in mind, not the internal combustion engine. Most streets just have one lane in each direction, they are not in a regular grid pattern with large intersections, and have lots of tight corners and awkward angles. So if you need a bus that can carry more people than a single-decker of a certain length, all you can do is add another deck, because if you lengthen the bus, its turning circle becomes too big for the roads. The last British city I lived in, York, had a similar problem. When the bus company introduced articulated "bendy buses" in the early '00s, it didn't end well. There were several incidents in which they took out street lamps, vehicles coming the other way and injured pedestrians and cyclists, so much so that they had to be abandoned within a few months on most of the routes. If they hadn't been, it would only have been a matter of time before someone was killed. Most US cities and suburbs simply don't have that problem, as all the major roads have at least two lanes in each direction and the intersections are big enough for a 100-foot long vehicle to turn in, easily.  |  IP: Logged Jim Cassedy Phenomenal Film Handler Posts: 1661 From: San Francisco, CA Registered: Dec 2006 posted 02-07-2016 01:06 PM                     Most of the neon sign at a local theater stopped working after a recent wind/rain storm. The owner sent me this picture and asked if I had any idea what was wrong. Ironically, I think the film title says it all... She chewed it pretty much to oblivion, and so I bought her another of the exact same model, from the exact same store. Even just a short time ago, Casper liked to sit inside circles. Don't know why but he did. Now, since we left a sheet of newspaper on the floor, he has taken to that, instead. He'll just plunk himself down on the paper and occasionally claw it and tear at it. I think he likes the crinkly sound it makes. Then, when the paper gets too torn up, we toss it and put out a new one. My old cat didn't care for the his nice comfy cat-bed. He seemed to prefer sleeping on, and playing around for hours inside of empty popcorn sacks I brought home from the theater.
