It simply doesn't matter to the majority of the audience. I have no idea where those places are so why would they bother to film it everywhere they said it was just to placate the small (very small) amount of the audience who would know?
There are exceptions, though, for places that are universally known.

For instance, for Superman IV Golan-Globus moved most of the money they received to produce the movie and used it for other productions. So when they were set to have Superman talk to the UN, they simply used some random place in London, even though most of the audience would've known what the real UN looked like.

Or I remember seeing an old western TV show that was supposed to be about Seattle and people initially settling there, yet it was portrayed as being a desert, where anyone that's heard of Seattle at all heard immediately that it rains there a lot...

Me neither. So why in HELL did Bobby Sherman convince me "The bluest skies you've ever seen...in Seattle."?

I always thought it would be awesome if somebody doing a low-budget movie did several establishing shots of various different city signs through the movie that...aside from the name of the city...were the exact same shot.

PUEBLO

SAVANNAH

Difference being that the earlier example was one of only people from a certain city knowing about the layout and the mistake, whereas the entire United States will know of it raining in Seattle (due to people watching the news and hearing about national forecasts and such).

This location argument non-sense reminds me of the time that a group of people came out of the movie "SPEED" and demanded a refund because it was entirely impossible for a Bus to make a jump like the one in the film. I was floored.

Hey people - it's a MOVIE - it's fiction - meaning it's NOT REAL. You go into the dark auditorium for 2 or more hours to have your beliefs suspended. If a car is barreling down highway 50 in Maryland and then cuts onto a road in California - it's called making a movie on a budget!

I don't agree. Movies have to earn the audiences' suspension of disbelief. An accurate portrayal of the setting is one factor in earning that suspension of disbelief. Movie productions have many more tools available to do that and some productions go a very long way on paying attention to those details.

The bus jump gag in Speed is a completely different subject. On that subject, many movies made in recent years have scenes that are laugh out loud bullshit. I often don't get into those movies because the implausibility pushes me completely away from getting immersed into the story. In the case of Speed the movie was fun enough that by the time the bus jump happened many in the audience laughed and went along with it. What's even more funny is the video extra on the 2-disc DVD showing the actual bus jump.

I recently saw a network TV promo for a police drama set in Detroit that is actually filmed in Detroit. If people really don't care and would put up with something like Toronto getting passed off as Phoenix why would the producers bother filming a new TV series set in Detroit on location in Detroit? After all, most TV shows these days seem to be shot in Vancouver, Mexico City, Australia and New Zealand.

You probably think it's for authenticity, but I bet the real reason is because Michigan offers enticing tax breaks for production companies who shoot there.

I have doubts those tax breaks do enough to lower costs to make shooting in many US locations competitive with filming/taping in Canada, Mexico, etc. Many American states have had tax incentive programs (even Oklahoma) to court TV and movie productions in place for years. Despite those efforts a lot of movies and TV shows with story settings in the US are still produced outside the US.

US-based TV/movie production costs are influenced by more than just demands of union contracts. Insurance costs on liability and worker's comp in the United States are sky high -which is no surprise considering more than half of the world's attorneys live and work in the US. Maybe other types of bureaucratic red tape are easier to wade through in other nations than here in the US.

I think the biggest thing on the side of American locations is the scenery of those locations.

I lived through most of the 70s and 80s thinking that the Trans Am could jump over a creek and continue basically undamaged, based on the scene in the movie "Smokey and the Bandit." The making-of documentary on the DVD from last year said that the car was in fact completely destroyed after making that jump.

But it's still a fun scene!

If you know the exact location of scenes of a film it can be terribly distracting as you know when one street does not connect to another.

During 16 Years of Alcohol I found myself distracted by the careful avoidance of showing the sex shop in the street they were filming in. It was, however, shown in reflection.

There were also other geographical discontinuities throughout the film.

The animated film The illusionist also caused me to notice geographical and historical inaccuracies, as well as working out what has changed since the days the film was set.
