Low grosses just means a movie was not either mainstream enough or not marketed enough. Take Dazed and Confused. Didnt do much business at the boxoffice. But damn, almost everyone who has seen that movie loves it. My main point is actually that despite receiving great reviews, Dark City failed at the box office and continues to be unpopular with general audiences, even though I love it and a small group of my friends does as well. Hence why it doesn't apply. The topic is "movies you like that no one else does" and not "movies you like that didn't do well at the box office." Plus, you're ignoring that quite a few movies gain popularity after going to video. Like if you go to imdb, Donnie Darko is listed in their "top 250" movies based on member votes, yet it only made $1.2 million in the theater. It clearly, doesn't count since a lot of people like it. Dark City was a box office failure, but received mostly positive reviews from critics (76% score at Rotten Tomatoes). Roger Ebert loved the movie so much he picked it as his favorite film of 1998 and even recorded a critics commentary for the DVD. Lots of movies have scored well with critics but didn't generate much interest with mainstream audiences. Near the end of every year dozens of movies geared for film festivals and garnering Oscar nominations are released.
