Author Topic: Movies You Like (But Nobody Else Does) Carey Barber Expert Film Handler Posts: 143 From: Newport News, VA, USA Registered: Jan 2003 posted 06-16-2010 04:26 PM                     It seems to me that movies like "Armageddon" present a third category: 1. "Guilty pleasure" movies that you know are bad but still enjoy. 2. Movies that were largely hated but you would defend as good. 3. Movies that are actually enjoyed by a lot of people and made a ton of money but are still regarded as "bad" by film buffs, critics, and the majority of film-techers. Movies like "Wolverine", "Pearl Harbor", "Transformers", etc are absolutely terrible (in my opinion). But they were also financial successes and a lot of people really love them. I would certainly not describe "Independence Day" as a movie that nobody likes. But people who are really into movies would probably say that it is a "bad" movie in the sense that it is mindless summer popcorn fun. These movies are not going to be taking home the Best Picture Oscar, but a lot of people still like them. The movie I had in mind while thinking about this topic was: The Pallbearer (1996) I think this movie never puts a foot wrong in its entire running time and is one of my favourites, but it's a movie that was ridiculed at the time. To this day, I have no idea why. Surely they didn't see the same movie. I remember there was some song in that movie that I used to think was really cool. In it, a knight is confronting his own mortality and plays a game of chess with Death himself. Pretty esoteric stuff for a Keanu Reeves flick! Missed it, hmmh. But I remember looking at the picture of that chess game on the TV pages and wondering if this is something I should see. On topic, I think "Last action hero" was mentioned several times. I think I only like it because it was the first time my dad took me to book films with him and see a preview, I think I was all of eight years old... it was the coolest thing ever, sitting on the balcony seats (I didn't even know they Had balconies in movie theaters back then!) watching a real movie, not a cheesy kids' flick, with dad. I think my career choice was pretty evident from then on... And hey, I simply love independence day. And Jurassic Park... I didn't have a lot of friends as a kid so I watched a looot of movies waiting for my parents to get off work (they ran the theater together back then). I swear I saw Jurassic Park thirteen times. It might have been a discussion before, has to have been, but do the lot of you sit in the audience every chance you get? If someone suggests going to the movies, are you the first one to run in the theater door or the first one with a pint in your hand instead?  |  IP: Logged
