People throw spitballs at me when I mention it, but I am a big XANADU fan. And I don't feel guilty about liking it either. I think it was way ahead of its time with awesome choreography that predated break dancing and moves that can easily be seen used by Twyla Tharp, not to mention the sweet way it honors Gene Kelly in his twilight years. In the finale, there is a single, long shot with the camera dollying in front of the skaters that is breathtaking in its complexity and execution. Not only do I like it, I can defend it (except for the wooden script and poor Michael Beck, who seems constantly confused and ill-at-ease, like a closeted gay boy who knows he's supposed to be turned on by Oliva Neutron Bomb, but is embarassed that he isn't). But as spectacle and extravaganza, it really is a marvel. And it's got the music of ELO!!...who doesn't like ELO? It's like not liking ABBA. I just don't understand why people hated XANADU so. And speaking about ABBA....MAMA MIA has already been mention, but I certainly second that nominee. And I will throw in KING KONG, the Dino D. Laurentiis version with the lovely Jessica Lang. I kinda liked it. Frank, thanks for mentioning that one. I love your assessment of Beck's very poor acting (your explanation makes a lot of sense as he was a bit of a pretty boy anyway and so your theory fits.) Other than Beck's acting, the only other cringe moment for me was during the finale when Olivia did the country music bit...it was horrifyingly BAD and ruined an otherwise excellent segment. The movie was ahaead of it's time and very entertaining as well. Oh, and a heart-stopper for a lot of projectionists...during the "Glitz" segment (they buy Gene Kelley some fancy threads) there is a point where Gene stomps his foot and the image rolls up into the next shot..first time I saw that I thought WTF just happened, looked like someone rolled the framing knob!!  |  IP: Logged Phil Hill I love my cootie bug Posts: 7595 From: Hollywood, CA USA Registered: Mar 2000 posted 06-25-2010 12:55 PM                  Whenever I watch "Xanadu", I *ALWAYS* think of this Hubba-Hubba Olivia Newton-John video... It has some great musical numbers, John Goodman does a great job. Is it over the top crazy? Yes! Are the Louisiana Gator Boys not one of the greatest collections of musical talent ever? Yes!! This film produced alot of catchy redo's of some classics. It's earlier when she first meets sue that she makes that statement. To add to my list, it looks like I'm going to have to add The Last Airbender. Not that it is one of my favorites, but I did like it, and it seems everyone else hates it. I had only seen a few bits and pieces of episodes when my kids were watching them, so I wasn't upset by how they chopped up the series.
