Author Topic: "Jaws"...Released 35 Years Ago Today Sally Ann Burgess Expert Film Handler Posts: 120 From: Queenstown, New Zealand Registered: Apr 2008 posted 08-08-2010 05:15 AM                     I was 9 or 10 when I first saw Jaws. On the last day of term before we broke up for the summer holidays, the teachers would put on a film for us. One year it was something Disney, then the following year it was Clash Of The Titans. Then the next year they played Jaws. Well I was sat in the front, about 50 of us kids on the floor and the teacher rolls this massive TV in on a trolley. After the first death, a few kids started crying and had to leave. After the kid dies, even more kids left crying. By the time the shark got to Quint I hadn't blinked for quite a while. And by the time the film was finished there couldn't have been more than 20 of us left. I still reckon there was a bet between the teachers on how many kids would cry off. That night I couldn't get to sleep until I had checked around my bed for sharks! It doesn't appear on Box Office Mojo's weekend chart. It did better than the lowest performing movie on that list at the one showing I attended. It was packed. The presentation was neither the best nor the worst I have seen of JAWS. Don't know why our programmers went for that over the DCP, or what the provenance or condition of the print will be like. I hope it's not a print from the original release, unless it's an IB one. I still think I made more money running JAWS than any other film I've run. It was a HUGE movie. Every show was packed. I was running it at a theater on Long Island, (NY) and it was summertime, so the theater added an extra show every night, to accommodate those who were at the beach or out on their boats all day. It was a 'union job' - - so an extra show meant overtime, and by the end of the week, I was into double-overtime. At union scale that's quite a bit of $$. And we ran the movie that way all summer. I made enough money that I wound up going out & buying a brand new car. I was young and didn't have any credit- - so I paid cash for it. (A decision that has come back to haunt me many times over the years. The FBI still has a record of that large cash transaction (over $10,000) and I've had to explain it every time I've had to get some kind of high security clearance) The movie did so well, the theater played it again all summer 1976. One night, when one of my friends was visiting me in the booth, I boasted that I'd run the movie so many times, I could do the change-overs with my eyes closed. - - and then I did a few to prove my point. In those days that sort of record keeping would have been done on paper, and so not only were those records created, but they later went through manual data entry going back that far and down to that level of detail, such that this sort of information is now at their fingertips today.
