There is no solution because there is no problem. The TSA is a "solution" to a problem that does not exist.

Exactly. This whole TSA mess is the real-life example of closing the barn door after the horse has run away.

quote: Mike Blakesley
The TSA has done nothing but scare people, intimidate people, and confiscate a bunch of bottled water and nail clippers, not to mention tons of "weapons" like nail files and pocket knives that were never intended to be used as weapons
True story: A friend of my landlord is an FBI agent, and every time he flies the TSA confiscates his nail clippers, yet he is able to board the plane...carrying his LOADED gun!! OK, someone tell me the logic of this..if anyone's gonna commit a crime, and had the choice of using nail clippers or their legal, permit issued handgun, which one would they be likely to use? I told my landlord to tell this guy to get the head of the FBI issue a letter authorizing him to carry those nail clippers and see how the stooges of the TSA react to that!

quote: Steve Guttag
Given the TSA or the bombers...I'll take my chances with the terrorists/bombers. Think about what has been said right here on this forum. If Tony so much as raised his voice (1st amendment right) he would be carted away and his kid taken away (even temporarily)...

That is the USA? Isn't that the depiction of how the KGB and other communist organizations have been historically presented?

Where, in the US Constitution, does using air travel somehow terminate one's rights? Enough is enough.

I agree 100% with Steve. That is why I will not, under the current climate, ever fly anywhere again. I'll drive and to hell with the TSA and their KGB tactics and attitude.

quote: Jonathan Smith
So the TSA and airport screenings are best just done away with?

Absolutely. Go back to the metal detectors and be done with it. Air travel survived for many years before the TSA and unless the TSA keeps running things, it will survive into the future.

quote: Joe Redifer
The pussification of America continues. AND: Safety is only an illusion, good sir.

My vote for quotes of the year. [thumbsup]

And for those who don't know it, I live within 3 miles of LA Airport, and two of the tenants in my building work at the airport. They have horror stories aplenty since this whole debacle started.

However, I'm not aware of any TSA challenges though it should happen and I'm sure our ACLU will get it to the court some time.
For what it is worth, it has been official ACLU policy since about 1969 the airport inspections are unconstitutional. They've just never found a court to agree with them. And, at least up until now, this was one of the policies anti-ACLU types would point to to "prove" how radical they are.

It is amusing that after the loss of habeus corpus, warrentless wiretapping, gov't sanctioned assassinations of American citizens, the PATRIOT act, etc, it is an airport search that finally gets the American public riled up.

So if you'd like to sign the ACLU's petition, here it is:

To be fair, airport screening DID catch the shoe bomber.
Uh, no they didn't. He was trying to light his shoes on fire on the plane mid-flight. One of many links that will confirm this.

If anything, it's other countries that need to step up their security for their inbound flights and whatnot to the US.

Oh Mike, I'm going to have to quote you a bunch here.

quote: Mike Blakesley
The TSA is a "solution" to a problem that does not exist.
That is the best definition I think I've heard.

quote: Mike Blakesley
The TSA has done nothing but scare people, intimidate people, and confiscate a bunch of bottled water and nail clippers, not to mention tons of "weapons" like nail files and pocket knives that were never intended to be used as weapons.
And yet the most obvious weapon is permitted without question on every plane. Put your set of keys in your hand. (Make sure there are several on the chain.) Now grasp all but one of the keys in the palm of your hand to get a really good grip, and position the sharpest, most evil key you have between your first and second finger, as close to your knuckles as possible and pointing outward (Medeco keys are awesome for this). At this point all you have to do is take a swing.

TSA could not be more ignorant. [Roll Eyes]

quote: Mike Blakesley
All the TSA does is react to things that have happened, with the assumption that the same thing is going to happen again.
Like I said, coming soon...anal probes! I could actually see a terrorist smuggling something explosive up their ass and intentionally getting caught, just to make us Americans suffer every time they go through TSA in the future. (Sadly I'm not joking. It's just a matter of time.)

quote: Mike Blakesley
no way is the government going to say "OK, everyone...we realize that this multi-billion dollar agency we created is completely impotent and unnecessary
Don't forget the loss of jobs if TSA was removed from the equation. In fact now they want to do buses, trains and such to EXPAND!

I guess this is all good news for perverts and child molesters, of which this will now be their #1 targeted job to apply for. After all with the brainwashed child suicide bombers, we MUST check every inch of these kid's underage bodies for national security, and what could be better than to get government immunity AND a paycheck to get your kicks? (That's sarcasm about the kids, but serious regarding the perverts and child molesters.)

quote: Mike Blakesley
Or who says they have to get a bomb ON a plane?
Damn good point, but why do it there? Do it at a major sporting event, like the super bowl! Uh oh, I may have just created more TSA jobs by the mere mention!!!

quote: Pravin Ratnam
Shouldn't they concentrate on having some kind of safe sleeping gas knock out the terrorists if they do manage to take control of the plane?
That's a solid idea there and one that wouldn't be too difficult to deploy, but it makes sense, so it will never happen with the asshats that are currently running the TSA.

I don't appreciate being treated like a criminal just for wanting to get to a far away place faster than driving.

The most ridiculous part is the total lack of security with regard to air cargo. I can go drop something off without showing any identification, using someone else's "TSA known shipper number" at any air cargo facility in the country and have it loaded on an airplane with the passengers.

Granted, I'm not sure exactly what is done to screen the cargo, but this seems rather lax given the passenger climate.

I've said it before, TSA sucks ass! Next time I fly, I think I'll wrap a cucumber in my pants with aluminum foil, Spinal Tap style!

One trip, I was traveling with my wife and 2 kids. I was holding my 1 year old son and my daughter was in a stroller. When they started boarding the flight, they said elderly and people with kids could board first. We were the only ones, and the first to board. At the gate, they said they needed to search me (they said Random search). I'm not sure how many times I said "you're fucking kidding me?" My wife had to carry our son and push a stroller down the ramp, then check the stroller, and get the kids seated while I was being searched behind a screen out of sight of the passengers at the gate.

They found a miniature screwdriver (for my glasses), about 2 inches long in my camera bag. They took it because they said it could be a weapon. I responded, "you're fucking kidding me?" " I could do more damage with this pencil"

When you think about it, just about anything can be used for a weapon. As Brad mentioned, keys for sure; but what about a pen or pencil? A thick book? A laptop computer? A cane? Even a belt with a heavy metal buckle could do a lot of damage.

I guess we should feel lucky they allow us to carry ANYTHING on the planes.

How about we look for terrorists?

I think Archie Bunker had the right idea.

The other side of this argument is that these TSA policies not only harm the public, but the airline industry as a whole. Who loses out when someone gets fed up with the TSA search policies? The airlines lose their customers over it.

I've heard some conspiracy theories bantered about that this is all an elaborate scheme to put the airline industry in a financial bind so the government can take over the industry, not unlike the GM thing.

I, however, think it's nothing more than stupid measures employed by stupid people, and accepted by the sheep that are the American public.

As no one has mentioned it so far, there's a phrase for this going viral:

Gate Rape

pass it on

The other joke I've heard about it is ... the next generation of kids won't grow up playing "doctor", they'll grow up playing "TSA"

The American President (1995)

quote: (Emphasis added)

SHEPHERD
(continuing)
I've known Bob
Rumson for years. I've been operating
under the assumption that the reason
Bob devotes so much time and energy to
shouting at the rain was that he simply
didn't get it. Well, I was wrong.

SHEPHERD
(continuing)
Bob's problem isn't that he doesn't
get it. Bob's problem is that he
can't sell it. Nobody has ever won
an election by talking about what I
was just talking about.

SHEPHERD
(continuing)
This is a country made up of people
with hard jobs that they're terrified
of losing. The roots of freedom are
of little or no interest to them at
the moment. We are a nation afraid
to go out at night. We're a society
that has assigned low priority to
education and has looked the other
way while our public schools have
been decimated. We have serious
problems to solve, and we need
serious men to solve them. And
whatever your particular problem is,
friend, I promise you, Bob Rumson is
not the least bit interested in
solving it. He is interested in two
things and two things only: Making
you afraid of it and telling you
who's to blame for it. That, ladies
and gentlemen, is how you win
elections.
You gather a group of
middle-aged, middle-class, middle-
income voters who remember with
longing an easier time, and you talk
to them about family and American
values and personal character. Then
you have an old photo of the
President's girlfriend. You scream
about patriotism and you tell them
she's to blame for their lot in life,
you go on television and you call her
a whore. Sydney Ellen Wade has done
nothing to you, Bob. She has done
nothing but put herself through law
school, prosecute criminals for five
years, represent the interests of
public school teachers for two years,
and lobby for the safety of our
natural resources.

1) There hasn't been adequate testing to show that these backscatter xray machines are safe for being used by people, especially by those that are frequent travelers or by children.

2) They also say the scans are no problem because it is not possible for the images to be stored... and yet there have been pictures leaked on the internet of images that were, in fact, copied off these types of machines.

3) The TSA agents are totally untrained. There've been reports that many supervisors get so swamped with required training video junk that they aren't given time/money to administer that they just tell the workers to sign that they did training they know they didn't.

4) With them being untrained, I saw a report of a guy who had bladder cancer requesting a private screening, since he was embarassed about his ostomy bag. When he attempted to tell the agents about his condition, they told him they didn't need to know his medical stuff. So in the end, they broke the seal to his bag, causing him to have his pants dripping wet with urine and didn't even bother apologizing. The guy had to do his whole flight with piss in his pants since his extra clothes were in the plane's belly.

Though I was surprised that at the Houston international airport, they had these scanners and all they did was send me through the metal detector.

Also, FWIW, I've flown out of Atlanta about a dozen times since the millimeter wave scanners were installed, and the only time I've been through it was when I set off the metal detector cause of a key I inadvertently left in my pocket. It seems to be a "secondary screening" tactic. When I go through the detectors without an alarm, I have not been subjected to the millimeter wave scan or an intrusive pat down.

I would think bomb sniffing dogs would be a better alternative.
