We had a Lost & Found officer responsible for keeping track of such things. In fact, there are laws requiring hotels to keep records of all lost items valued over a certain amount. (Like $5.00 or something stupid like that.) Items worth less than $100.00 had to be kept for 30 days until they were disposed of. Items worth more than $100.00 had to be kept for 90 days. For items of "extraordinary value" (no specific amount but we assume it to be large sums of money, etc.) a police report had to be filled out. A "trained" security guard, regardless of the venue, should have some training in lost and found procedures even if there is no specific "Lost & Found" department. Even if the guy wasn't specifically trained on lost and found, it is reasonable to assume that the owner of a "fancy pen" might come back looking for it. Why not just put it into a pencil cup or a desk drawer somewhere? Regardless of what you think the value of the pen might be or how valuable the pen seems to be, or whether you think the pen was stolen or merely "misplaced" the guy went outside the scope of his job when he took it.  |  IP: Logged Joseph L. The work is farmed out to private security firms. Agreed completely, and I wasn't trying to suggest that he shouldn't have faced any consequences at all, only that criminal charges are possibly a bit disproportionate. Anyway, if you think the US TSA is bad, be thankful you don't have to put up with the Chinese one. I was chatting with someone who has just got back from there yesterday. In front of them at the airport security queue in Shanghai was a mum, dad and baby. As they approached the checkpoint, the security officer demanded that the mother hand over the baby, which he then placed in a tray (of the sort you put your laptop, bag in etc.) and put him/her straight through the hand baggage x-ray machine! The outsourced security were all fired and replaced by Bush/Cheney. I'm not at all sure the TSA are any better than what we had in place already. Brian Ross channeling his inner Mike Wallace. Excellent stuff. I am conflicted about the TSA these days because a good friend of mine went to work for them last spring. She enjoys the job. Whenever I see her I say, "Can I see the TSA scowl?" which cracks her up.
