They are not talking about the Sikh shooting they are talking about a guy that brought loaded guns in to Dark Knight Rises showing. The guns were in a tote bag so same movie and with a very possible intent to do harm. Hence copycat.

Since the shooter at the Sikh temple is dead he can't admit to anything. Unless it is to a some psychic or something.

quote:
Oak Creek, Wisconsin (CNN) -- The gunman in the Wisconsin Sikh temple tragedy died from a self-inflicted wound to the head and not from a shot by a responding officer, the FBI said Wednesday.

Police previously said Wade Michael Page died after being shot by the officer. That shot in the stomach was potentially fatal, but Page died from the self-inflicted wound, said Teresa Carlson, special agent in charge for the FBI in Milwaukee.

You may see dead people but they don't talk to you! LOL

B.C. man charged for Facebook threat to copy Colorado shootings

B.C. man charged for Facebook threat to copy Colorado shootings

Ryan Lewis, 32, has been charged with uttering threats.

A 32-year-old B.C. man is facing charges after allegedly threatening to carry out a copycat of the Colorado movie theatre shootings that left 12 people dead.

Mounties in North Vancouver say Ryan Lewis "made significant death threats" on his Facebook page "to commit crimes similar to the recent shootings in Colorado."

Lewis was arrested Aug. 1 and charged with uttering threats. He was released from police custody on several conditions, including that he not have access to the internet.

"The police are committed to keeping our communities safe and take these types of threats very seriously," said North Vancouver RCMP Cpl. Richard De Jong.

"Social media is a powerful tool and can be used for good or bad. Comments and postings are not private and for public safety reasons, are taken seriously."

Twelve people died and 58 were wounded when a gunman opened fire on an audience attending the midnight premiere of The Dark Knight Rises last month in Aurora, Colo. James Holmes, a 24-year-old former University of Colorado graduate student, is in custody and charged with dozens of counts of first-degree murder and attempted murder.

Since Frank's news story came after Mike's comment I quoted about a copy-cat, my assumption was Mike was indeed referring to to Sikh shooting. Unless maybe he's the psychic to which you referred??

As for the gunman being dead - nope, didn't know that. I just read what others reported here. I didn't much news lately and what I did see was all about the crappy Olympics. Since the only comment was that the gunman had been "brought down" by the second officer on the screen [sic], which could mean any number of things, I guessed he was still alive. My mistake.

I was referring to ALL "copy-cat" incidents. The fact that there ARE "copy-cat" incidents is an indicator of how many crazy nuts there are out there.

Nation's Sane People To Nation's Insane People: 'Please Stop Shooting Us'

WASHINGTON—In the aftermath of Sunday’s deadly shooting in which a white supremacist allegedly shot and killed six congregants at a Sikh temple in Wisconsin, the nation’s psychologically sound populace issued a statement begging its insane counterparts to please, please stop shooting so many Americans. “Today we come together with a single voice, hoping to reach you with one very simple message: For the love of God, please stop firing your guns at us,” a statement from the sane read in part. “We don’t care if you’re a 22-year-old male with a history of psychological illness, a severely unhinged graduate student who fell through the cracks of our mental health care system, or an embittered middle-aged man convinced that religious minorities are threatening the fabric of America. All we ask is that you cease charging into rooms full of innocent people and raining down bullets on everyone in sight.” After making their urgent plea, the American people reportedly began stocking up on guns in the hopes of preventing future shootings from taking place.

Is there something about Batman in particular that attracts kooks?

Or is it just attention-seekers with no imagination of their own. "That guy got lots of attention with his antics at the Batman movie. I'll do something just like he did and get some attention too!"

Regarding Frank's story about the guy caught with weapons - is there probable cause there? Maybe there are some details missing, but I find it hard to believe a man with a satchel sitting down early is probable cause to search his bag.

We all have guests that, for whatever reason, like to come early. Really early. And we all have guests that sit by themselves. The posession of a bag is not anywhere near enough to be considered probable cause, unless the theatre has a strict no-bag policy and they knew the off-duty cop was just that and they asked him to investigate. I know I would be furious if an off-duty officer asked to search a bag I was carrying, just because I got somewhere early and sat by myself. There's either something missing to this story, or the guy gets charges dropped.

The police officer asked for permission to search the bag and the person gave the permission. No probable cause is need if the officer ask permission and you give it. If you have illegal concealed weapons and give the man permission to search where you have the those weapons then you are the dummy not the cop.

There is no grounds to drop charges, the officer didn't demand to search the mans bag he asked. Not much different than "hey buddy can you give me a smoke," if the buddy gives you the smoke he can't complain that you got it.

I have no problem letting a cop search my belongings I have nothing to hide. If you say no he has to have probable cause to continue. Simply saying no isn't probable cause. But the man didn't say no.

The man has used a defense that he was frightened to be in the movie without the guns because of what happened in Colorado. That doesn't really hold water to me. Besides which he had no permit, he was violating the law, and the police of the theater.

I see now in an article the off-duty officer was indeed notified by the manager that the man was suspicious. That's the probable cause I was looking for. I knew it had to be somewhere, most cops aren't that dumb.

Chad but probable cause is not required for an officer to ask to see in your bag. He need have no reason at all and if you give permission then what he finds is certainly fair game. If they ask to come in your house and you give permission and there is a bag of coke on a table they can bust you.

Probable cause is only necessary if they don't ask permission.

Unless that permission was coerced.

When a large man in a police uniform comes up and says, "I need you to let me look inside your bag," it could be said that this is coercion... Not that I agree with that but you have to be aware of that fact when you are a security agent in a public place.

(If you are a security guard at a nuclear laboratory, things are different.)

The kid could have just said, "No, you can't look in my bag. Refund my ticket money and I'll leave."

At that point, it would have been over unless the kid did something that made the officer believe that he was a threat. Otherwise, it's hands off.

No, it just goes to show how many crazy people are out there. Would-be copycats are not necessarily gun nuts.

EDIT: Oops, I figured you had typed "gun nuts".

Not exactly. Technically, I'm combining terms. What the officer needs to stop or ask you if he/she can search you is called "reasonable suspicion." A cop cannot simply stop you and ask to search you or your car for "no reason at all." The difference between reasonable suspicion and probable cause is strictly legal nomenclature - in practice they mean the same. In this case, the officer obtained reasonable suspicion from the theatre manager. But my apologies for not using the correct term.

Man accidently shoots self in Nevada theater

quote: Yahoo News

SPARKS, Nev. (AP) — Police say a man accidently shot himself in the buttocks at a Nevada movie theater during a showing of "The Bourne Legacy."

Police in Sparks, Nev., say the 56-year-old man's injuries are not life-threatening and no others were hurt.

Authorities say the man had a permit to carry a concealed firearm. The man told officers the gun fell from his pocket Tuesday night as he was adjusting himself in the seat and that it discharged when it dropped to the floor.

Authorities say the case will be sent to the city attorney for possible charges.

Netflix is looking better and better, or at least safer...

Yeah that's a great idea. Let's all stay cocooned in our homes.

Also, you're far MORE likely to get killed driving on any highway than you are in a movie theater so for God's sake, everyone stay off the roads. [Roll Eyes]
