Are you kidding?
- A dark theatre (showing a dark movie, incidentally) - Screaming people, many standing and running - Tear gas and/or smoke in the air - A moving target (which is actively firing with automatic weapons) - A completely unexpected situation
Given all these things, do you seriously believe a gun-toting amateur good guy would have the time to be able to get his gun out, calmly take aim, and be able to take the bad guy out without hurting any innocent people? I'm beginning to understand the term "gun nuts."
Maybe an off-duty cop or a military veteran could pull it off, but other than that? I'd have serious doubts. You're far more likely to have a good guy who starts firing wildly in the general direction of the bad guy and winds up taking out a couple of kids.
The only "advantage" to having audience members "carrying" would be in the area of deterrence. If I was planning to shoot up a place, I'd probably be less inclined if I thought maybe a few of the people in there were packing. But then, if I'm planning to shoot up a place I'm probably crazy, so how much logic should I be expected to have?

Oh that is such a load of crap. Why are you "far more likely?" You're acting like someone would duck down behind seats and just start firing away over the top blindly. People who legally carry assume the responsibility that comes with that choice and part of that responsibility is being certain of your target. While you may never be able to prepare yourself for that exact situation, you know enough to not shoot unless you are certain. I have confidence that the great majority of gun owners, including those on this forum like Brad, Bobby, Randy and others, have this kind of discipline even under stress. You don't?

You never "want" a kill shot. You want a stop shot, which is always center mass. Like I said, even if it had been a ballistic vest, a bullet to the chest can knock the wind out of you, break a rib, cause an irregular heartbeat, or just generally hurt a whole lot. And in this case, that center mass hit could very well have killed him.
Here is a video of what a redneck getting shot while wearing a "bullet proof" vest looks like if you're interested http://m.youtube.com/?reload=2&rdm=m84j1ond#/watch?v=ZnkYN_4XZhI
