My choice of pronouns for "James Eagan Holmes" was purposeful.

"Kid," being a diminutive word used in the pejorative sense, was meant to belittle in both a physical and emotional sense.

The word "joker" was used in irony. Do I need to explain this? After all, it was a Batman movie! [Wink]

Being found not guilty by reason of insanity is not how it's portrayed in the movies. Sam Jackson isn't grilling in his back yard the evening after the verdict. Instead of prison, you are confined to a mental institution. There are more guards/nurses per patient. Usually the sentence is longer, although in this case it's going to be life regardless. If a patient is found to be "well" prior to the end of what would have been their prison sentence, they are transferred to a prison to serve the remainder. It's not a "get out of jail free card," it's a "this cell has padded walls" card.

And the stupidity continues: [Roll Eyes]

A 52-year-old movie goer in Norwalk (Calif.) was arrested Sunday after allegedly shouting about a gun and the recent movie-theater shooting in Colorado, sheriff's officials said Monday.

Clark Tabor allegedly started creating a disturbance at the AMC Norwalk 20 Theatre at about 5:15 p.m., at first by shouting that the movie had not yet started, sheriff's officials said.

Several witnesses told police the suspect appeared to hold his cellphone in the air and yelled, "Does anyone have a gun?" and "I should go off like in Colorado."

Tabor was arrested on suspicion of making criminal threats – a felony – and is being held on $50,000 bail plus unrelated warrants, police said.

The man seemed to refer to last week's movie theater massacre in Aurora, Colo., in which a man dressed in tactical gear opened fire on a crowd seated for a midnight screening of "The Dark Knight Rises."

A dozen people were killed and 58 were injured in the shooting. James Holmes, 24, was arrested outside the theater -- his hair dyed a bright orange and telling police he was The Joker.

Colorado's shooting prompted the LA Sheriff's Department to step up patrols around Southland theaters. Several other LA-area law enforcement units added extra patrols in the wake of the shooting.

Officials last week encouraged Southland residents to keep their plans to see a movie and not "let the actions of one man doing a cowardly act" affect their movie-going experience, but they did advise them to be alert -- echoing the mantra of the "See Something, Say Something" campaign.

Fellow patrons on Sunday alerted theater security of Tabor, who was found by a theater security officer wearing a backpack and kneeling in the second row of seats, police said.

No weapons were found on the suspect, in the theater or its surrounding area, or in Tabor's residence, police said.

He is set to appear in Bellflower Court on Tuesday.

I am really starting to hate people in general if this is the level of intelligence that is common today.

Not to get into a political debate, but I just will never ever understand the American obsession with firearms, it's just in no way part of Canadian culture.
Again, not wanting to sidetrack this into politics, but I don't think the kneejerk "America=gun massacres" reaction is in any way accurate or helpful. Britain has some of the most restrictive firearms laws in the world (to all intents and purposes, it is illegal for private citizens to have any access to them at all unless they need them to do their jobs with), but if you Google Michael Ryan, Thomas Hamilton or Raoul Moat to name but three, you'll see that if someone is determined enough to kill and injure lots of people with guns, they will be able to do so pretty much anywhere.

I have now spent a significant amount of time in America and am engaged to a US Citizen. From reading the local media in her neighbourhood, I get the impression that crimes involving firearms probably happen with about the same frequency as they do in an equivalent city in England. Sadly, there is a limit to what can be done to prevent a disaster like this from happening. We can't uninvent guns, and as yet it seems that we are not able to spot the warning signs of someone who is contemplating something like this early enough or accurately enough.

Lots of people from around the world have this idea that all Americans are carrying guns and/or like guns. I personally have never held a loaded gun in my hands and likely never will. Just not my thing, and I'm far from the only one. People "carrying" at any given time are really a very small percentage.

I will wait to read the final police report once it is released. As a theatre manager of 23 years, I want to see what happened and how I can learn from this horrific incident - using actual facts.

On another note:

This guy wants to be "known." Any attention he gets plays to his fantasies. Perhaps the theatre shooting was just to get the police to enter his booby trapped room.

As a society, we should only note that "the assailant was apprehended. His booby trapped apartment was disarmed." Nothing more.

Otherwise, we are playing "his game." louis

Has anyone had any customers try to joke or ask about gunmen at your theatre? I've already had a few, which is kind of awkward since it happened within an hour and a half drive of us, but I let them know that we keep two of these loaded behind the counter and have the last few months.

I'm glad to see Andrew's puzzlement about "America's obsession with guns." Makes me think of my experience...

I learned to shoot in the U.S. Army during the Korean War (M-1 Garand 30/06 rifle, .30 M-1 Carbine, .45 "grease gun" machine gun, 1911a Colt .45 pistol) at the cost of much of my hearing, leading to a small pension. I used this knowledge to teach shooting (.22 LR)to teenagers in summer camp, staging co-ed team matches with a watermelon prize rather than a gold medal. Back to college I joined the marksmanship team for riflery and a local club for target pistol shooting with 1911 Colts re-barreled for 22's.

When the National Rifle Association took no action after the assasinations of John and Robert Kennedy and Martin L. King, but instead increased their opposition to most restrictions on gun acquisition, I quit that organization.

Recently I sold my collection of nine antique and vintage rifles
to a licensed dealer of same. I hadn't fired any of them in decades; the outdoor range I used had long ago disappeared; the cost of renewing my permit rose to $250 every two years; my eyesight was no longer adequate for target work, and I seek to protect wildlife, not go hunting. I gave over all clips, magazines, ammo (severely outdated) belts and boxes, and kept only a few of the bayonets for souvenirs.

My fascination with rifles was in the mechanical precision of their operation: Mauser bolt action, Swiss T-bolt, gas repeater operation, etc. more than target proficiency. Now I have a few other hobby collections to divest myself of.

I still think Glocks and assault weapons like the AR-15 or Kalasnikov are intended only for killing human beings. They are poorly suited for any pretense of marksmanship, and ridiculous overkill for sportsmanship.

I've been thinking. This kid needs to be taken out of solitary confinement and placed in general population.

Right now, he is living out a Batman movie fantasy. He thinks he's Bane or some other composite of a super villain character. He is in Arkham Asylum, doing his time until his day comes.

I think they should take him out of his fantasy and treat him like any other prisoner. Put him in a cell with a very large Black man named "Tiny." When the cell door closes and the guards turn their backs, Tiny looks at him, smiles and says in a deep voice, "You my girlfriend!"

Welcome to prison!

I'm not saying this simply out of a warped sense of retribution. I'm saying this because I genuinely think this boy needs a dose of reality.

Not to get political, but you're not the only one. It's no way a part of Australian culture either.

Perhaps overstepping Brad's rules here, but: The Second Amendment seems a bit of an NRA crutch to me. It might have been relevent in 1791 when there was just a bunch of divergent states with individual militias and the British might have attempted to retake the United States at any time, but in 2012 it just seems so ... frankly dumb... to leave that unmodified in the Bill Of Rights.

That theatre has a "no firearms" policy. I guess Holmes must have missed the sign on the way in, otherwise he certainly would have called off the attack. I mean, those policies stop threats, don't they? Or they just leave people who obey them more vulnerable...

There's a misconception that needs to be cleared up here...Exterior auditorium exits are NOT emergency exits.

I have NEVER seen exterior auditorium exit doors alarmed. They're commonly used by customers who park near the auditorium doors. And that's how it should be. It keeps the corridor flow to a minimum. The initial media reports saying this was an "emergency exit" were completely ignorant of multiplex design.
All exits become emergency exits in an emergency. Most places don't have exits labeled as emergency just as exits. Just my 2cents worth.

Not to get political, but you're not the only one. It's no way a part of Australian culture either.

The second amendment is for home security as well as for protection from the government or as an aid in the protection of our government. well armed militia is for states to use.

The Second Amendment was written when muskets and cannons were the norm, so I do think it needs updating. However in THIS particular attack, the guy could have walked in with a couple of muskets and still been able take out several people, especially if he had tear gas and smoke working in his favor.

I'm not sure how to handle this thing from a P.R. standpoint. I had some lady come up to me yesterday afternoon and ask me "is anybody going to that show?" I said yes, lots of people were, why wouldn't they? She said "well after that thing in Colorado I wouldn't think people would want to risk it." So I gave her the whole "this was an isolated random incident by a complete nut-case who is now in custody, so the chances of it happening again are very slim" speech.

But then later I thought, maybe I should have gone the "we do everything we can to insure our patrons' safety" route, rather than the nonchalant "it's very unlikely that it will happen again" route.

I suppose the size of the venue has a lot to do with how to handle it.
