Probably the most installed machine in circuits I service and outside of abuse they have given next to no trouble. I had 4 of them that were about 40-50 years old and ran perfect every time. I could have threaded pots and pans in those machines and it wouldn't even phase them. Right now I'm running the worst projectors known to the industry, The Simplex Apogee. I would imagine most multiplex developers would choose them due to economics not quailty. The Vic 5 quailty control at the factory seems to be asleep, we bought 3 new ones, 1 works fine ,2 has noisy shutter gearbox, 3 has noisy intermittent. and they were like that from out of the box. What is it exactly you do not like about the Apogee? Better than I like the Simplex 1050, 60, or Millenium. The new gate is much more complicated than it has to be, but does show a good image. Their basement digital reader retro-fit perform quite well, and I've noticed lower vertical jitter rates than on any 5 Star. Like Gord says, if they get proper service, they just run and run. Having said this, I haven't seen any new Vic 5's. They break constantly and when they do they implant themselves right in the sprocket holes of the film and if you are not watching the print it will slice one side of the film off as it plays. The bad thing is that my failsafe doesn't catch it and it will keep doing this until you stop the film. I destroyed an entire print of After the Sunset because of that. Another reason I don't like them is the teeny tiny cramped loop that you have to make right as you come out of the intermittent. When splices try to make that cramped little loop they often fold at the seam and when the splice snaps back in place it causes the film to jump out of frame. I already have intermittent sprockets rollers falling apart and they are being held in place with RUBBERBANDS!! The dousers constantly need adjusting. I could type all night. I told Ballantyne about all of these problems and they are sending one of there tech's up to inspect. I'll keep you posted on what he says. I don't see Gray anywhere...... Perhaps the last greatest concentration of DP-70's anywhere in the world for a very wise customer !! The Silver Hammertone bases in the photo were not painted by us..... The bases are still to be painted/rewired for the frequency drive motors they're all getting.... BTW: The Lucas machines are Metalic Black. DP70's anyone???? It may be a bit noisy, but it's not audible outside the booth. I know that the projection manager at the local multiplex prefers them to his flock of Kinotons (which have plastic gateplates and a tendency to wobble).
