Jarred, I beg to differ [Razz]
The MPAA will not be killed by piracy (which, last I checked in the webster was "murder and theft of valuables on the high seas").
The MPAA is committing suicide (as is the RIAA, strange, heh) with all the [bs] movies they are coming up with

  • terminator 3
  • the hulk
  • gigli
and a few more I haven't even heard about.
compare these 200M USD movies with what they did with 20M (that's 10 times more per movie) on Underworld...
of course, we all know where the 20M schwartzenegger took for terminator 3 went... the financing of his campaign in california [Roll Eyes]

So.. speaking of insiders being the #1 cause of piracy in the film industry.....

A copy of the workprint to Kill Bill is out. Looks perfect, like off a DVD.... not a cam in a theater... this came off a high quality source... the film has been out what? a day now?

It's amazing how they are screwing filmgoeers with the capcodefromhell crud yet stuff like this comes out within 24hrs of a release. [Frown]

So, does this supposed perfect copy have 1) cue dots 2) CAP codes (in the b/w scenes)?

--jhawk

(p.s.: "workprints" are usually not color timed and don't look good at all, in my limitted experience; not to be confused with EK/show prints.)

The Brainiac is at it again... From Broadcast Engineering : Article Link

quote:

Piracy problem not worth losing an Oscar

Jack Valenti, the main lobbyist for the movie industry, is now having second thoughts about banning DVD and videotape “screeners” from being sent to voters who select the winners of Academy Awards (see “Beyond the Headlines” 10/6/03).

Sources said Valenti, the chief executive of the Motion Picture Association of America, has been under considerable pressure from art-house distributors, actors and directors who say that the ban would hurt their chances of winning Oscars. As a result, Valenti is expected to go back to the studio executives who agreed to the ban and propose a compromise.

That would include marking videotapes electronically before they are sent to Academy members. The videotapes, which could be traced easily, would be delivered by certified mail. But the compromise would not include the distribution of easily copied DVDs, and not every videotape would be marked.

Apparently piracy is one thing, but so big a problem as to interfere with the changes of winning an Oscar. Stay tuned.

For more information visit www.mpaa.org.

And, as always, other interesting stuff also on their site.

I watched Kill Bill tonight. I couldn't believe the number of times I saw the CRAP coding come up in the long black and white sequence. It was so obvious, I don't know how anyone couldn't be distracted by it.

John,

don't know on the crud or anything in the 'workprint' copy. Only saw it briefly, have prettymuch zero interest in the film. Plus regardless of my 'ubergeek' status I still much prefer real theaters to see movies and not overcompressed half-rate internet downloads.

Can anyone remember a print with the newfangled CAP markings from hell on anything other than a Deluxe print?
we're using the term "CRAP code" to denote those tight sharp clusters of bright red-orange dots, right? when they are large diffuse brown blobs spread over the screen, i assume that's normal cap code that just got way over-applied. i saw a few of those on mystic river, r2 (technicolor, according to the credits).

i saw a whole lot of them on r4 of school of rock too, enough that the over-application seemed intentional. however, they were all right at cuts in the film, so at least some attempt was made to hide them from the audience.

I went in early this AM to start training a new operator, who didn't show up(needless to say, he will not be with us), so I decided to sit down and screen our print of Runaway Jury that was made up by one of my new guys.

Now, I don't often get the opportunity to screen a print beforehand, and damned if you guys are not right about this CAP code business!! I noticed them numerous times and they were quite obvious. Damned distracting, too. The kid had done a magnificent job making up this print, and here is this [bs] all over it!

Interesting that it is a Deluxe print, too. So much for pristine presentation.

Deluxe must have stock in the digital cinema business.

I've noticed that while the CAP code used to be on reel 2 (and was admittedly very hard to detect), this new Deluxe CRAP code seems to favor reel 4. Is this the reel everyone is seeing the marks on, or is Deluxe changing up the reels randomly?

Does anyone here have an email address to someone in charge of these things at Deluxe? Don't post it here, but it would be appreciated if you could drop it to me in an email. I have some questions I would like to ask directly.

Maybe the CRAP code is part of their "Anti-Piracy Plant Certification". [Roll Eyes]

What the hell is in that picture that is in the upper-right circle? Looks like cookie crumbs or some sort of crazy mess. Deluxe is obviously unsanitary.

Most major motion-picture laboratories are members of the Association of Cinema and Video Laboratories (ACVL) and contacts are listed in their on-line membership directory:

http://www.acvl.org/members.htm

The laboratory usually decides which reel(s) to print any anti-piracy code on. It is entirely possible that multiple coding methods may be used on the same print.
