As far as I know, there is NO IMAX release of this year's Hunger Games movie, not on film and also not in Digital. Last year's release had footage shot on IMAX film in it. I guess they didn't want to compete with Interstellar.
The new Hunger Games installment may not be in "IMAX," but its TV commercials are spamming a few of the surcharge priced, house label big screen theater concepts. Exodus: Gods and Kings is doing the same thing.

They aren't. The second player is so if the primary one should fail it defaults to the backup the same way that if dts fails mid-show it would revert to analog (or some other form of digital like SRD) to keep the show running.

It takes a lot to damage the timecode on a 70mm print, so the weak point is the player itself (even though they are quite robust). Remember older players are reading the data live from a spinning disc. The XD10 and XD20 are reading the data from a hard drive, but both CDROMs and hard drives DO fail, sometimes without warning.

Its just an extra (optional) step in the setup of the system to help ensure nothing goes wrong. Think of it like those safety rings around the print on the platter. Odds are we could just tuck the tail and have nothing go wrong, but if the option is there to take an extra step to ensure the safety of the print and shows, why not? These prints are already crazy-scarce, so they really do need to be treated with every precaution possible by knowledgeable projectionists with lots of experience unlike the Cinebistro "projectionists". [Roll Eyes]

I wonder if Cinebistro will simply stick with digital going forward or if they will try to play the next movie in 70mm as well? And did Paramount make them pay for the print they destroyed?

That's a really cool idea. I had no idea the XD10 could do that. Is it designed to do that out of the box, or did you come up with that scheme?

I completely agree with using safety rings, etc, to ensure nothing goes wrong. Probably not going to be necessary, but take the precaution anyway.

I assume the question about Cinebistro is a rhetorical one. I don't work there or know anyone who does. And what next 70mm title??

Tarantino has announced he will probably shoot his next movie in 65mm. It might even be shot in Ultra Panavision 70...

There are no other new releases planned in 70mm AFAIK.

Inherent Vice, shot in 35mm is slated to get a 70mm release in a couple of weeks...a month ahead of the wide-release.

IVANHOE is slated to be shot in 65mm with a presumed 70mm release.

And, of course, QT's movie as detailed elsewhere.

Yeah, indeed, I totally forgot about P. T. Anderson's new movie. But has the 70mm release been confirmed or will it be a road show/film festival only thing with just a single print?

I don't understand why Inherent Vice would need a 70mm blow-up print. The movie was shot in 35mm, and in flat format rather than 'scope (which is pretty unusual for P.T. Anderson).

Back in the 1980's it wasn't unusual for flat 1.85:1 and 1.66:1 movies to be blown up to 70mm prints, but it was mainly for the magnetic 6-track audio. Once the 35mm digital audio formats arrived that practice ended abruptly.

Under proper film handling conditions a 5/70mm film print of a 35mm sourced movie will probably still look better than a 4/35mm print. But the differences are only going to be more noticeable on really big movie screens. Inherent Vice doesn't seem like the kind of movie that would be geared for giant screens.

As to other upcoming movies that could utilize 70mm film prints, I really have to wonder if any productions using the new Arri Alexa 65 6K digital camera might try outputting 6K to 70mm film as a means of one-upping 2K & 4K digital theaters.

Grand Lake in Oakland is starting its final week of Interstellar in 70mm. Ran two weeks on screen one then two weeks screen two and now back to screen one. There was talk of putting it in screen 3 in a week but with Hobit trilogy and a studio DCP screening of Inherent Vice that is not happining. Yes we can show 5/70mm on three of the four screens at the Grand Lake. We are expecting to get Inherent Vice in 70mm. P. T. Andersons last film The Master was 1:85 on 5/70mm. Had to file a special plate for it.

Any place else running Norelco AAs?

The Aero in Santa Monica uses a changeover pair of AA mk. Is, and the Egyptian in Hollywood has AAIIs, both venues with DTS 70 readers.

Interstellar finalized the 70mm run here this Tuesday. Around 34.000 tickets sold for Interstellar in 70mm. At one point it had sold 20% of all Interstellar tickets in Denmark. -
