A shot of the equipment setup from the right side. A shot of the equipment setup from the left side. This roller exists purely to assist with keeping film off of the floor during threading. Once the film path on the right side of the digital projector has been fully threaded, the operator can walk to the left side of the digital projector, grab the film off of this roller and finish threading the projector. This is a shot of the completed threading path. As anyone who knows anything about film, no presentation is complete without FilmGuard. And as always Film-Tech Safety Rings are used to protect the film from sliding and extra large center rings were assembled so the platter could be re-calibrated to a significantly slower maximum speed than with normal rings. The 70mm playback is via dual XD10s, located here in the digital pedestal. The output enters a QSC BASIS 922az where it is injected into the auditorium's BASIS system via cobranet audio. Note the two rollers above the electrical wireway to permit people to walk right up to the windows and not accidentally "walk into the film". The 70mm projector is a Century JJ with the penthouse removed. As this site will never run magnetic 70mm film, it made threading a bit easier. Just as with LOOK Cinemas, the preshow and trailers for Interstellar in 70mm are presented via the digital projector in flat. At the feature the masking opens up to scope and an automated digital to 70mm film changeover occurs. There is a 60 second preroll on the 70mm (not the usual 8 seconds). Preshow is presented as a collapsed mono signal. Trailers open up stereo with left, center and right. Then the feature kicks in the full 5.1 system (surrounds and subwoofer). Appropriate volume changes between formats are also automated. Reverse shot of the 70mm projector and threading. The 70mm system is my personal equipment on loan to Studio Movie Grill free of charge. After listening to the recording to verify that they have one set of showtimes in 70mm, I showed up at the theater only to find out that after running it for a few days, the print was horribly damaged and rather than showing a print in that condition, they're just showing it in digital. They will not be getting a replacement print, apparently, due to its cost. I don't believe I've ever seen 5/70. Looks like I may never get the opportunity. Reports were that they scratched it starting with day one, and every day they ran it the print suffered more and more damage (supposedly different kinds of damage, not just the same scratches getting worse). They should've hired a professional with 70mm experience, not a tinkering hobbyist to run it. There is no way to install 70mm at either of the SMG locations in Atlanta. Both were constructed with retarded mini-booths. Never again. However rumor has it there are many different airlines now offering non-stop flights to Dallas from Atlanta. But how long will it be around? I'm afraid I won't be able to for several weeks. Ah, forgot about the mini-booths. I've seen the pictures. Whose idea was that, and what purpose were they trying to serve? I won't cast judgement on someone I don't know, but I wholeheartedly agree that a professional should have been hired. They blow their wad right out of the gate and anyone who doesn't see them in the first couple of weeks just waits for the bluray. I highly doubt Interstellar will still be on screen in 5/70 in a few weeks.
