Went to the 8:00pm Tuesday 70mm screening at the Alamo Ritz.

Honestly, not that impressed. The QC screening I did this morning on my 4k Christie was better in just about every way. The biggest issue I had was the colors on the 70mm print seemed all shifted slightly green, tons of weave, strobing, and a regular pattern of focus shift (basically, the film would be solidly in focus for 2 seconds, out of focus for 1, in focus for 2, out for 1, the ENTIRE runtime.)

I'm running the 70mm at Look Cinemas tonight and now that it has finally been released digitally this evening, went to the other large auditorium to do a side-by-side comparison of the 70mm vs. digital on a Barco 32B.

The 70mm won, hands down. I didn't even need to pop back and forth between the rooms repeatedly. I had seen how the 70mm looked over the last couple of days plenty enough to know almost instantly that the Barco lost.

When comparing the 70mm vs. the Barco on the two big screens and then comparing a small screen running a Sony, the Sony was laughably crappy.

I doubt these findings really surprise anyone here though. The 70mm is on a 65 foot screen. The Barco on a slightly smaller screen. The Sony was on about a 30 foot screen.

Brad,

Would love to see more pics and video of the LOOK presentation in action when you have some time.

For those of you complaning about the sound mix... have you EVER heard a Christopher Nolan movie with a good sound mix? Think about it. I bet you haven't. Dude loves awful sound. Remember Bane in the first Batman Rises trailer? People bitched and moaned so much saying they couldn't understand shit that he brought up the dialog levels a bit for the actual release (I read somewhere that he went back and "cleaned it up" or something). Dude wants his dialog probably -3db to -5db of where it should be. He's just a weird fellow and not the best person to finalize a sound mix. Theaters might want to adjust the center channel volume up a tad to take into account for Nolan's dialog mixing ineptitude. Dude also can't shoot or edit a fight scene for shit
The sound mix for Interstellar really sucked. I agree that theaters should adjust the center channel. I tried watching The Dark Knight and The Dark Knight Rises on bluray the other day, and I couldn't stand the mix. It did not sound like a normal movie.

Yet Inception won Oscars for the mix and editing [Smile]

Brad

Since this is a 4K DCP, was the Barco a 4K or a 2K? Saw a 70mm print in Atlanta on Wednesday and was looking forward to seeing it on my 4K Barco when I get back into town today to compare.

Here's your NY Times full-page ad from this morning's paper, Bobby. They didn't put much effort into it. They don't even post the show times.

Denver, Colorado Center 9 IMAX 70mm film. Today 12:00 pm (known as "noon" in some languages). Disaster. Movie started late. Paramount logo came up. Then black. Lights came up. Audience refunded.

Full disclosure: I was not there, but Jen was. She said that they told the audience there was an error and hoped to have it fixed by the 3:30 show.

I noticed from your pictures that the sprocket holes on the left intrude into the picture. Is that normal for 5/70? If so does this mean image is reduced for when projected? Is any of the DP's composition compromised?
Mark... The image below is a frame of 70mm test-alignment film. The gray-shaded portion represents the recommended area of the frame to be projected.

Just heard from some friends who attended 70mm Varsity that the image quality was below expectations and that there were some issues with understanding some of the dialog in the second half of the film.

Correction. Audience was NOT refunded. Audience was issued passes. That's pretty shady if you ask me. $18 ticket and if you use your pass anywhere else you waste money.

It has been reported on the Interstallar online report page.

Funny, as I've been getting great feedback on the visual presentation at Varsity 8. The sound part I can understand though.

Joe that's absolutely terrible... [Frown]

At my showing, I talked to someone who came down from Fort Collins, an hour and a half each way (more with traffic). It wouldn't surprise me if there were folks at Jen's showing who had come from that far or farther.

We can send spaceships to Saturn but the idiots at Regal (and the other screwed up locations) can't run a damn film? Sadness.

Would an NY Times ad like that normally have showtimes in it? I don't see anything wrong with the ad, personally...it tells something about the film, makes people want to go see it, and tells them where it is playing and it what format. I suppose that it could have included 35mm sound formats, but I haven't seen that in a newspaper ad in years. And does anyone--even the people here--realy care whether a film is being shown in SRD or DTS?

Well, y'know, Regal isn't exactly synonymous with quality. Or even proper standard presentations. Or movies. But they'll be happy to give you a rewards card after standing in line for 10 minutes!

Did they blow a lamp? I've heard that those 15K lamps in 1570 machines can be a bugger to change.
