Author Topic: Movies still being released on film Julian Antos Film Handler Posts: 76 From: Chicago, IL, USA Registered: Nov 2009 posted 02-05-2017 12:51 PM                     The Market Square 5-plex in Madison, WI will be running SULLY in 35mm for 9 more days before switching its last two screens to Digital. I went yesterday and it was a great experience. Good, clean print, good SR sound (they didn't have SR-D on any of their screens and haven't received Datasat disks in a good long while, but the SR track sounded refreshingly nice - good lab work all around), and a nice bright image with good focus. I used to drive up there every every few months - I believe this was the last screen running new movies on 35mm within driving distance of Chicago. Very simple shoebox of a booth, originally with all Century SAs and Strong platters. Update: It looks like SULLY is closing on Thursday and being replaced by FANTASTIC BEASTS on 35mm, so that will likely be the last title shown on film. My question: where on earth is the SULLY print going to next. When will it end? I think everyone should go online and buy a ticket (1st run prices!) to Friday night's show to celebrate. Then stay home and stream it. Arclight Sherman Oaks, just down the road a short ways, will get Dunkirk in 70mm and shut SO5 out. In fact, you'll be hard pressed to find any release there in earlier than its 2nd or 3rd week. I'm sure many of those 35mm shows are threaded up but never run.  |  IP: Logged Mark Campbell Expert Film Handler Posts: 148 From: Seattle, WA USA Registered: Jul 2007 posted 03-17-2017 12:26 PM                     Well knowing Nolan's aggressive push to give his movies film presentations whenever and wherever possible I would not be surprised if the SO5 gets Dunkirk in addition to the Arclight. They are both run by the same company as Pacific is Arclight's parent and there have been times when they have played the same film day and date in the past. In fact I think recently both played Batman Vs. Superman at the same time with it showing in 35mm at the SO5. Also a WB release like Dunkirk. When Interstellar came out my local neighborhood sub-run Admiral Twin played an advance 35mm engagement. It was so successful that the management flipped the entire theatre to first run and built a business case to remodel it into the 4-plex first run movie house it is today. Off-topic I know, but just showing that Nolan seems to want to book his films anywhere still capable of running film. I am always rooting for the Sherman Oaks 5. Their schedule reporting's been wonky in the past, so I'm not sure what to make of it now since Fandango has listings for the next three days. And it's 2 digital screens only, with 5 titles divvied up between 6 shows!
