Colorado Center tells me they will be showing Dunkirk in 70MM IMAX.
Whew; early last week they still didn't know.

Ah well, so much for the prints from the ON then.

There were a handful of prints of The Dark Knight which did this for "prestige" locations. Does anyone know if this was ever repeated or was it a one-off?

We can confirm Alamo Drafthouse Ritz in Austin, TX at this point for 5/70, also working on two more locations

From what I've heard this deployment should be closer to H8 numbers than Interstellar for 5/70

Am going to a preview next week at the WB Theatre in NYC -- anyone know if they have a 70mm setup? I would rather wait to see it at Lincoln Center in IMAX 70mm if the preview is going to be ordinary digital (nothing said about 4K). Seeing it sooner has never has any attraction for me. In fact, especially with films I have enough interest to pick my butt up and go to a theatre to see, I purposely will wait just before I think it will get pulled before I do; that strategy avoids the crowds and the unwashed, texting addicted riffraff.

The blurb says nothing about the format other than "this film is "FLAT"(??) -- whatever that means -- obviously written by people who are too damn young to know what "flat" means to people who work with film. Although I suppose flat could mean 70mm, given it's projected with spherical lenses, but I have a sneaking suspicion that whoever wrote the copy don't have a clue about that either.

I'm also wondering if the WB Theatre has an Atmos system. The score is mixed by an Alan Meyerson and I'd love to hear that in Atmos.

I would be extremely surprised and shocked if Dunkirk was released in flat format. Every movie trailer has been in 'scope aspect ratio and the content clearly looks like it was composed for the 'scope aspect ratio. The only thing "flat" I would expect to see is anyone watching the 15/70mm IMAX version would see giant full screen, full IMAX film sequences. I'm almost positive all other theaters will be showing the movie in a 'scope ratio, with 5/70mm being slightly taller at 2.20:1.

There isn't any Atmos mix for this movie. As far as I can tell the sound mix is regular 5.1 digital.

One problem is there isn't any direct way to deliver an Atmos track via 5/70mm or 15/70mm. The only way you could manage it is with some kind of odd-ball interlock setup where you're piping the audio from a d-cinema DCP into an auditorium playing a 70mm print. It would be a crap shoot getting the audio in sync. You could try that with a movie like Wonder Woman (which has 5/70mm prints and Atmos on the DCP). But Dunkirk just doesn't have Atmos at all.

The film is shot flat in 1,43:1 IMAX format and flat in 5/65mm, 2,21:1 format. No anamorphic lenses were used.

"Dunkirk will feature over 100 minutes of IMAX material, according to sources close to the production"

Running time around 110 min I've heard.

Out of curiousity, how did they do this? To the best of my knowledge, the standard 15/70 Imax camera is too noisy for shooting synchronized sound. So, one of the following must have happened: a) Imax has invented a camera (or blimp for an existing camera) that runs quietly; b) there is almost zero dialogue in the film; or, c) almost all of the dialogue in the film is dubbed. Which is it?

I think I may have asked this question before on this site but I can't recall the answer, are 70MM prints still using the DTS CD ROM discs for audio playback?

Also, here in LA, American Cinematheque (Aero/Egyptian theaters) will be showing a few "original" 1982 70MM blow ups. So I guess that means they still have the ability to play the Magnetic tracks?

In general, "yes", unless it's an original 'vintage' 70mm print/title, such as
they might be running at The Egyptian, which I'm sure can still run mag tracks.

I haven't seen the 70mm Dunkirk print I'll be running yet, but for Hateful
Eight, sound was played back from a DTS XD-10, but the soundtrack itself
was shipped on a USB thumbdrive, and not on DTS disk-type media.

I'm assuming Dunkirk will be the same.

There were DTS disks for Hateful Eight as well. The print that we had in Somerville came with both a flash drive and disks.

The "8-channel" DTS mixes (which are set up for five screen channels) have come on DVDs. IAMMMMW and West Side Story are two such titles that come to mind.

Hey Scott, with the IMAX camera "loudness" situation, they're ADRing everything anyway due to the locations. The 5/70 stuff I assume was used for the scenes they needed a quiet camera, where dialog was critical. Otherwise, why bother using double format.

So add that there is a good possibility that Alamo Drafthouse New Mission Theatre in San Francisco will be showing it in 5/70mm. They would be running reel to reel there.

The list has been updated as I write this.

http://www.in70mm.com/news/2017/dunkirk/index.htm

Three 70mm prints in France, and one in Australia, and the US to follow in a moment

I deleted the "hacked" list, as it was incomplete and full of errors.

Feel free to proof-read the list

I'm wondering if someone didn't just take the Hateful 8 70mm list and use it as a placeholder when coding the website.
