quote: Aron Toplitsky I meant to ask if there was a request from the studio for projectionist "not" to lower the fader as some theaters do.
To answer your question: I did not get any 'special instructions' of any kind regarding any special audio level settings with my 70mm print, nor did I see any notes in the box with the DCP version I"m using for a 'backup' if I need it.
In theory, the DTS unit, when installed should have had it's output levels calibrated to the input of the audio processor. I wasn't around when they did the install, so I can't say if this was done or not, at least at my location.
When I went to check out the theater a couple of days before opening night, I noted that their regular DCP playback level on their CP-650 was "5.5" in that auditorium, which seats over 400. But when I ran some test films I brought with me, as well as when I did a complete "Dunkirk" run-through before opening night, "5.5" was waaay too loud. Trust me! I've finally settled for 4.0 to 4.5 depending on how full the house is. I have gotten a few complaints about the sound, but that has more to do with Nolan's mix, than with the house audio levels.
(and then there was one crazy guy who kept insisting that I was running the film in "the wrong aspect ratio", even though I've only got ONE lens, & ONE aperture plate, and unmovable maskings. So it's a technical impossibility to run it in anything but the A-R I've got. . . even if I wanted to. Geez! )
