Next thing you know someone will wonder aloud that if you were projecting from that same celluloid, but rotated sideways, just imagine how much bigger and clearer the picture would be! [Big Grin] [beer]

Not clearer, just taller, more like a big 4x3 tv. Less cinematic if you ask me.

Normal "scope" 15/70 really doesn't offer anything that 5/70 already does, except waste most of the frame on black. The image size and resolution is virtually identical.

I haven't yet heard whether Dunkirk will have a variable aspect ratio like Nolan's past films or not. Anyone?

Yes, it is variable aspect ratio. They decided on it in post actually.

Some of the ads say 75% of the movie was filmed in 15/65mm 70mm and the remainder was 5/65mm. They don't just decide in post whether a certain sequence should be full frame 15/70 IMAX and another shot cropped to 5/70 unless the entire thing was filmed on 15/65mm negative.

Looking at the bright side, even though this movie has some variable aspect ratio stuff happening, at least the entire movie is a true 70mm movie. I plan to watch it in both 5/70mm and 15/70mm. I just hope the movie is actually good!

Gee, who would have thought that you could get "rich analog color"
by just projecting light through some celluloid.

They gotta say what they can about "analog" to appeal to that hipster crowd.

Great news guys-

The AMC Leawood 20 is showing Dunkirk in 70mm on their H8ful 8 setup.

Looking on their website for tickets tells a fantastic story.

Thursday evening they have two 6:00pm shows... one 70mm and one digital. The 70mm show is sold out.... the digital show doesn't have a single ticket sold. The trend continues all through the weekend. Friday night 7pm 70mm- Sold out. 6pm digital- 2 tickets sold.

Glorious!!!!!!

WOW that's great news! I have a feeling the film prints will out-sell the digital in every venue available. Here in Hollywood, I just checked the ticket sales for thursday (opening night) and they have 2 theaters running 70mm prints, all tickets for thursday and friday are sold out for film, the digital theaters have plenty of space available.

Here's a bit of a stupid question: How many theaters that previously ran The Hateful Eight in 70mm and are set to run Dunkirk in 70mm still have their projectors set to run 70mm in Ultra Panavision?

Considering rampant misuse of RealD on Sony projectors and other framing errors I've seen, I wouldn't be surprised if at least a couple theaters mistakenly show Dunkirk in 2.76:1 rather than 2.20:1. It would be the 70mm version of people using the stretch-o-vision button on their HDTV sets to stretch 4:3 content.

Thanks to the corporatocracy that is the vassal crown state of Canada - a colonial entity that has a foreign monarch as its head of state...And the US are the bad guys?
cineplex run by the occultist stooge Ellis Jacob - we have a monopoly in the GTA gate kept by the so called Competition Board which by proxy of the federal government allowed for 89% control of exhibition by cineplex.
Net result is that the 35mm and 70mm equipment Kingsway Theatre - opened in 1939 and present for the events of the rout of Dunkirk CANNOT play Dunkirk on release because the parking lot engulfed multiplex Queensway is opening it instead.
Who said the corporate Fascist did not win wwII? So much for Dunkirk and its lessons...in the ever present future of 2017 - the future where Fox, Universal, Paramount and Sony have bailed on zones and defacto clearances in the USA. But not in Canada where corporate welfare is at its apex while Trudeau changes his neo-liberal socks with the changing winds of entitlement politics.
The ironies are limitless and absurd...tempered tonight - at least for me by the words of Eddy Grant...

My understanding is that the lenses were all gathered by an independent contractor hired by the Weinsteins, so only the back-up lenses would still be installed in the machines. That would make stretching out the Dunkirk image pretty difficult, so we can all breathe a sigh of relief that that snafu is off the table.

That having been said, however, I worry greatly about the condition of the prints. A majority of the H8 prints were returned in -- let us say -- something less than pristine condition. I fear a similar fate will befall the Dunkirk prints.

Bobby, I'm pretty sure a team went around to all of the Hateful Eight projectors and calibrated them for Dunkirk. I know there were some pix that BLS posted on facebook of those guys.

I wouldn't be surprised if they updated the platter brains and a few other components that mucked up so many Hateful Eight prints.

Tyler that is correct. Often they are installed on different screens than where H8 showed and in most cases need different prime lenses. Also these are permanent installs.I was involved with a couple of them.

Much to my disappointment, I didn't see a "Dunkirk" display ad in today's edition of the Los Angeles Times. There were, however, a couple of mentions of 70mm in some of the smaller text-based directories.

Has anyone from elsewhere seen any large display ads in your local newspaper?
