Dolby Labs mandates the use of "5.1" in terminology to describe Dolby EX soundtracks on DVDs. It is against their advertising guidelines to use 6.1. Dolby EX is not a discrete 6.1 system and thus should not be described as that.

The situation is different regarding Dolby Digital Plus (for use on HD-DVD and Blu Ray Discs). Dolby Digital Plus supports higher bitrates than the 640kb/s maximum of Dolby Digital. It can go as high as 6 megabits per second. Dolby Digital Plus can support the 8 discrete audio channel maximums of HD-DVD and BD and extend farther than that for other formats in the future.

Of course, a Dolby Digital Plus decoder will be yet another thing to put on the checklist of items needed in a new audio-video receiver. Lots of HDMI connections would be at the top of the list.

Bobby’

You’re all clued up on this and one the ball as usual, now I can’t speak about what Joe’ said but I think he should consult a Doctor before he overflows the sewers and “Denver” is flooded and overwhelmed with diarrhea. http://www.bangkokhealth.com/cimages/diarrhea02.jpg

Now this is getting some attention, it’s all about spectacular or adding more parts of the room with extra sound, anyway call it what you will, other than this new “Dolby” format, “Dolby Digital Plus” holding up to 8 channels wow, now will this have the left centre and right centre channels or do they have different plans for this.

Anyway Bobby’ do you think you can post a direct glossary link explaining more on “Dolby Digital Plus” sounds good.

Maybe we can have some of the old Todd-Ao films as they where meant to be heard five-screen and split-surrounds, D’oh! Sorry mono surrounds as split-surrounds didn’t come around till mid 1970’s “Superman the movie”, will if they what to remix the film and not give us the original road show event, so be it.

Frank’ sorry you have been left in total confusion, on these issues I trust that you will make heads and tails of all this madness.

One more thing Bobby’ will dts be on the HD-DVD band wagon, with a newer version of dts-ES or will it remain unchanged only with a higher bit rate, oh and why isn’t Dolby implementing this new format into the professional field the cinema, and once again “making films sound better….” [Smile]

If it's against their advertising policy, then why do they use it on their website?

The Dolby website says "in effect, 6.1".

If you disagree, go find a Dolby EX DVD that says "6.1".

This thread started out irritating, veered over into the realm of disgusting and has now just become irritating again. I vote to close it, just to drive Andy crazy.

There should be no surprise to find Cinemas that are "THX certified" to actually be sub-standard in their presentation. I feel that THX never really meant anything on most parts because it's up to management to ensure that it's "THX" 365 days year. Not just when the THX guy is around the corner.

Here in Melbourne THX cinemas are all over the place. Sometimes good then other times bad. And being THX don't bring them more patrons either.

_______________

Andy with our preview cinema setup of a DOLBY CP55, QSC power amps and aaron loudspeakers will knock your digital THX, JBL, SPL down any day. [Big Grin] And yes that's without stereo surround!

One thing i don't like about Home Theatre is that apart from the music the rest of the mix sounds fake ie: the sound effects actually sound like sound effects etc rather than being realistic as they are with decent Cinema set up.

Keep in mind the trailers for the re-issues of
Star Wars 4,5 & 6 had that little [dlp] in the background with voiceover saying " "if this is the way you see Star Wars, you haven't seen them at all..." or something like that.

I just don't understand why they are not available for theatrical distribution.

I suppose instead we just go over to Andy's place and have the experience of our lives [Roll Eyes]

Let me get this straight, are you saying your setup playing a plain stereo or mono track will sound better than another nice system playing the same material in 5.1 digital? If that's the case, I don't buy it. The quality of source material being played is a primary determining factor on whether the sound quality is good or not.

Basically, someone would have to have a horribly set up system (either commercial or in the home) to have 5.1 sound worse than an optical stereo or mono track.

1. The verbiage on Dolby's website is written by more than one person -likely many people. Lots more room for error.

2. Whoever put up the 6.1 and 7.1 phoney baloney bullcrap probably only did it to make some geeks in one tech-head camp happy -probably so they would stop e-mailing Dolby to tell them "it's really 6.1!"

The argument of it being okay to describe DD-EX as 6.1, 7.1, etc. makes about as much sense as a car stereo fanatic claiming his automobile has 20 channels of sound based solely on his number of amps and speakers. If you're playing a normal red book CD on the thing, you're only playing back 2 discrete channels. Not any more than that.

Not a good example. Because Dolby EX is being called 6.1 from the viewpoint of an added encoded channel, not because of the fact it uses an additional amps and speakers.
Dolby has consistently referred to their Dolby Stereo optical format as providing 4 channels of sound, yet that only has two tracks.

I'm curious to see the source cited about Dolby's policy regarding EX not being called 6.1. It's still odd they would still be violating that on their own website after all this time.

Bobby,
I have compared our sound and picture to top end cinemas and home set ups. In my opinion we are just as good and some cases better. Of course there are certain venues here where the sound is superior to ours.
If i had the budget i'd go digital too but being non commercial, and non profit doesn't allow for it.
We always get compliments on our sound whether playing back 35, 16 or video.
One evening I had a cast and crew screening for a short which was to screen in 35mm but somehow the optical sound was printed out of sync to the picture (long story) so that was replaced with Digital Betacam. The guy who did the sound mix at the top end Sound Firm post house was concerned that the sound would be inferior off the digi beta compared to the optical track.
He was quite impressed and mention after the screening " I didn't know it would sound that good".

With our system I like what I hear, i'm not saying that it's the best but for our needs and budget it's damn good. [Cool]

Linky Linky, Paul.

Direct quote from link to Dolby PDF file:

quote:
Also, it is important to note that consumers have come to expect the term “5.1” to refer to 5.1 discrete channels of audio (five full-range channels plus a low frequency effects, or LFE, channel). Dolby Digital Surround EX carries 5.1 discrete audio channels with a matrix-encoded Back Surround channel. It is therefore not a true 6.1-channel system, and the term “6.1” should not be used to describe it. Some new formats carry more than 5.1 channels of audio, including 6.1 discrete channels, and it is therefore important to prevent consumer confusion by distinguishing between the 5.1-channel Dolby Digital Surround EX format and true 6.1-channel formats.
I think that pretty well settles the "EX is 5.1 or 6.1" argument.

Bobby’

Hallo there I’ll get to the point, now I’ve just looked into the Dolby web site for information on “Dolby Digital Plus” which you stated it can support up to 8 channels 7.1, now I can’t find a speaker diagram layout for this, it has to be on the site somewhere? So I’m just going to take a guess will it have five-screen channel and the usual split-surround configuration with Dolby surround-EX including .1 sub bass LFE, sounds like the SDDS 8 format, or will it be left centre right split-surrounds discrete centre back surround and discrete height surround or “Sonic Whole Overhead Sound” with the .1 sub bass LFE, which configuration will it be?

Do you have those facts…?

Paul’

The whole point to Dolby surround-EX is to eliminate the disorientation between the stereo surrounds with phantom imaging which can be disorientation, I’ve noticed this effect so many times, I and with Dolby surround-EX it juts makes it more easier to pin point sounds and make the flybys with airplane spaceships etc, and giving the mixers for flexibility and creativity, it’s like this, Dolby pro-logic will work with any stereo format depending on ho it’s mixed which is what I have noticed.

Now there are some films that some people say sound better in Dolby pro-logic, like the surround effects, bearing in mind the crosstalk errors there will be some parts of the music that was mixed for the front, well it’s going to find it’s way leaking into the surrounds overlapping or masking a particular part of the music like a violin, and a trumpet from the fronts is masking the violin on the surrounds due to phasing of the signal, well, will use that for argument sake shall we.

“A View to A Kill” on DVD the opening titles by “Duran, Duran” is only played back over the left and right fronts there is nothing carried on the centre channel and no music on the split-surrounds as well, but in Dolby pro-logic someone will say it sound better in Dolby pro-logic, you see what I mean by that.

However by placing a Dolby pro-logic in of the front left and right and placing amplification EQ and extra loudspeakers, like upper center which is taking the signal from the phantom left and right, and with the press of the button activating the Dolby pro-logic will give a more precise location of the sounds placement, thus sending it to the center which I have placed above the stranded centre channel output.

Now with using Dolby pro-logic and placing more loudspeakers for the surrounds including amplification EQ, or I can use a stereo mixer and by using the line inputs of a basic 6 channel model lines 1 and 2 for side surrounds and sending the pan pots to left and right, line 3 the signal from the surround matrix output from the Dolby pro-logic and keeping the pan pot centred thus the signal will be going to left and right, and adjusting the levels with wideband pink noise to get it all finalized the center back surround will output in the normal way…

17 days to go...October 31st 2005....
