Why don't you tell us how you really feel about Sony, without the cutesy misspellings?

The HD-DVD of "300" is a combo disc with regular DVD on one side and HD on the other, so it's priced about $5 more than the Blew-Ray disc. While the combo format is a good idea, they shouldn't be priced higher than other HD titles; usually the Blew-Ray of the same title is cheaper when the HD-DVD is a combo disc, and those who have both formats opt for the Blew-Ray because of that.

Why even bother with the regular DVD side, especially when it already has its own, much cheaper DVD release? Are they retarded? I see that as a huge disadvantage, not an advantage at all. Why don't they include a VHS tape duct-taped to it as well?

Actually, I can understand the dual disc thing. If you customer is currently an SD user but is thinking about going to HD, they might shy away from buying a title that wont be HD when they buy an HD player and monitor/projector. They don't want to buy the title twice (once in SD and then later in HD).

While SD looks decent enough on small monitors...it really shows it lack of information when shown on larger monitors and decent sized projection screens...mine being about 11-feet wide makes DVD really look rather shoddy but HD programs look pretty nice.

Warner and Universal are both re-releasing HD-DVD only versions of former Combo disc versions.

Today Paramount / Dreamworks announced that they will drop support of blu-ray discs. The studio will support HD-DVD exclusively.

That is interesting news!! Perhaps it says what those studios think of Sony in general. Of course Sony is the competition if you want to call it that.

I've noticed in this area Sony has really stepped up the advertising of Blew Ray disks and releases on TV. When you visit the stores around here selling both you generally see the HD-DVD shelves alot more bare than the Blew Ray shelves. It could mean two things.... Sony is faster at getting stock back into the stores shelves than the HD-DVD guys are or HD-DVD is simply selling better around here.

Exclusive support for HD-DVD from Universal and Paramount/Dreamworks just makes it even more certain that dual format HD disc players will soon be very common.

Actually, these current players that play only one format will be soon be a dying breed. You won't be able to buy a player that does only one HD format within the next couple or so years. Even Sony will eventually have to make HD-disc players that support both Blu-Ray and HD-DVD formats. That makes any "HD-DVD versus Blu-Ray" format debate a very irrelevant thing. "Software" from movie studios is what will drive those formats. And there is next to no hope at all that all the studios will side with one format. It's already been clear for at least a year the movie studios will not collectively move in that direction.

This gets even more interesting.... According to the article.....

Their decision was made in part because...

"The availability of lower-cost HD DVD players led to the studios pulling their support from Blu-ray. Toshiba currently has players in stores for less than $300."

" Katzenberg says that HD DVD will thrive this fall with more affordable players and a highly anticipated wave of movies, including blockbusters such as The Bourne Ultimatum, Knocked Up and Evan Almighty (from Universal, another HD DVD-only studio), and Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix (from Warner, which supports both formats). The coming season "is adding up to be a game-changer" for (HD DVD), Katzenberg says."

"Paramount and DreamWorks' announcement suggests "the battle is not nearly done," says Joe Laszlo, senior analyst at Jupiter Research. "And it's not at all a safe bet either of these formats is going to be the dominant one."

Wouldn't it be interesting if a third format came into existance and took out both of them????

Kinda goes on the old business saying: "Don't worry on making dollars, just worry on making pennies to gain customers in the long run."

..what VHS did to BETA since Sony got too greedy and wanted dollars on their BETA products..even though BETA was ten times better than VHS any day of the week.

I can understand Paramount being a force, but didn't Dreamworks call it quits recently and get gobbled up by some other studio (Paramount?). One (or two) studio(s) is hardly a nail in Blu Rays coffin.

Anyone rooting for the demise of Blu-Ray, or even HD-DVD for that matter, is rooting in vain. It isn't going to happen. I don't think any third format is going to come into play either. It's a little too late for that.

All the major studios have aligned themselves in one camp or the other, with Warner Bros. being the only major studio offering some support for both formats.

The Paramount/Dreamworks announcement means very little. Keep in mind the fact the Disney movie companies and 20th Century Fox are backing Blu-Ray exclusively. That's pretty big. Sony is far from being alone in its support of Blu-Ray.

As to the cost claims of HD-DVD versus Blu-Ray players, that's also a pretty lame argument at this point in the lives of both of those formats. Both are still very much high end, niche market formats. Neither format will grow to mainstream status as long as this so-called format war exists.

The thing that will take both HD-DVD and Blu-Ray into the mainstream are dual format players. Once they become common and common at fairly affordable price points then the public will buy lots and lots of them. The movie studios themselves show no signs at all of moving to any unanimous decision over which format to support. That makes dual format players the only sensible option.

For now, the vast majority of customers are going to stick with regular old DVD.

I think Bobby's right, at least for the time being. The dual-format players will win. Eventually it won't be a matter of owning a BluRay player or an HD-DVD player, but just a High Definition Player (or whatever name they'll think of). Playing different discs on them will be like playing MP3s or WMAs on your computer. It'll just be a format. I think one will probably eventually win, though. I have been wrong twice in the past, so we'll see.
