I have a HD DVD player I can return because I am still under the 30 day no questions asked return policy. I have $150 in the player. Logic Almighty that this is the first movie. They are not numbered so I had to guess. Please please please! The other two suck so damn bad that I'd rather suicide myself, but the first one is actually good.) -Flight of the Phoenix (I have never heard of this, but it sounded better than the other choices. This is probably something that is straight-to-video or similar). -Mel Gibson's The Patriot starring Ronald Emmerich (I sure hope this is better than Independence Day and The Day After Tomorrow... two movies which make stabbing yourself in the eyeballs look fun). Yay! I'll crank it up! I'll still probably watch Superman first since I haven't seen it in about 40 or 50 years and it has an extra 8 seconds or something fantastic (which I'm sure I would never notice). Maybe Wednesday night will be flight night. Just finished with that Mel Gibson Patriot movie. It wasn't bad, but it could have been shortened from 3 hours to 2 hours just by eliminating all of the unnecessary slow motion (ie: showing it in real time).  |  IP: Logged Steve Guttag We forgot the crackers Gromit!!! I've seen it many times throughout the years and don't recall anything demanding....oh wait...you are probably referring to the unnecessary remake with Dennis Quiad... Get yourself a REAL movie with James Stewart! And before you say that no one of the current generation knew the 1965 version...even the almighty Joe hadn't heard of the "current" one either and he knows EVERYTHING. Don't worry Joe...I'm sure that your THX/WOW/JBL....ETC sound system will take the demands of the track. They don't just give those plaques out to every system, you know! Except, I chose Martin Scorsese's The Last Waltz in the category where Flight of the Phoenix was listed. Didn't like the remake very much (although the plane crash was really cool). Never was all that enthused about the original version for that matter. One BD with a particularly odd over-abundance of bass is the 30th anniversary ultra-phiggidy edition of Close Encounters. While some of the Lester footage is still there, it's almost an entirely different film. The key is that they need to be shown the differences so that they can appreciate them for what they are. When all you're used to seeing is sub-par quality, you don't know any different. That's not the fault of the consumer, it's the fault of the retailers whose job it supposedly is to sell such items effectively. More often than not, the problem is that stores are not run by enthusiasts. They are run by business people that don't know or don't care about the product they are in business to sell. They see expenses and revenue, and they need to see incontrovertible evidence that doing anything is going to decrease the former, increase the latter, or both. All profile 1 players should still be able to play the movie itself. Absolutely nothing else matters. You seem to be interested mainly in the special features. That is truly sad. Not at all. I care very much about the movie picture and sound quality itself. If not, I'd be watching it on my PC monitor through my powered speakers (decent monitor and decent speakers, but no match for my home theater). However, one of the most noticeable differences between DVD and the high def successors are the other abilities made possible by the new formats. Even if people can't see or hear the difference, they can see features that the standard DVD doesn't have and immediately discern the difference. Such features are also bullet points and talking points that can be used in marketing and packaging the product that are more tangible than "1920x1080" picture and "Dolby TrueHD" sound. It's a forgone conclusion in my mind that the picture quality and the sound quality are going to be better, so why belabor the point? Especially when such improvements are a subjective thing that not all people are able to discern, and whether they appreciate the difference even if they can discern it. Providing network connectivity on a player opens up a lot of possibilities that are not possible with a player without it. If you don't want to take advantage of them, fine, don't plug it into your network. With 3.5 million PS3's and counting, you can bet that studios are working to take advantage of BD-Live functionality. Just because there haven't been any good examples of it yet doesn't mean that we never will. The most recent example of a lost opportunity was with the HD DVD of Eastern Promises that I just finished reviewing. It was released right before Christmas, and Viggo Mortensen was nominated for a Best Actor Oscar a few weeks ago. I think it would have been nice for the studio to place a "Congratulations Viggo" featurette in the Web Extras portion of the disc. It's that kind of timely material that such connectivity allows the studio to do. What a silly little movie. I have no idea which 8 minutes were the extra 8. I like how Lex Luther hates Superman for NO REASON WHATSOEVER and also tries to defeat him for NO REASON WHATSOEVER and then somehow figures that a random meteorite MUST be krytponite (he even knows what it is called) and he automatically knows without any evidence whatsoever that it would harm Superman. Who writes this shit? It is definitely shit. What a crap script. Lois Lane's interview with Superman gave Lex Luthor all the information he needed (can't see through lead, always tells the truth, kryptonite will kill him, etc.). And Superman might have gotten in the way of Luthor killing millions of people and making billions of dollars. I'll agree, there's no logical reason to hate Superman since he's such a good guy. But hating would be easy if you lost your girlfriend to "The Man of Steel." Hate the game, not the player. Lex also informs Superman EXACTLY where the missiles are going (which also seemed to be launched for no reason unless I missed that part). And we won't even go into spinning-the-world-backwards-reverses-time issue. And please don't mention "Can you read my mind". Gag. Silly movie with piss-poor writing. Most other comic book movies are better. But the Lex Luther humor keeps it watchable (like how he can come up with a moving house in minutes).  |  IP: Logged
