The last I heard, the only station in Lubbock holding onto the analog until June was KCBD, the NBC affiliate. The others plan to make the switch.

The current DTV channel assignments are only temporary.

So, remember that even if you have a DTV converter box already hooked up and working, you'll need to re-scan your channels after midnight tonight since many of the stations, even those delaying turning off their analog tranmitters till June, will be moving their DTV brodcasts to their new 'permanant' channel assignments tomorrow. (June 18)

Actually, roughly 60% of the nation's TV stations are already operating on their permanent DTV channel assignment.

Going by the latest FCC rules regarding the delay, stations broadcasting DTV signals on temporary channel assignments won't be able to move to their permanent positions until after June 12.

That situation is certain to cause even more confusion. It may not be necessary for viewers ready for over the air DTV to perform a channel scan tomorrow. However, viewers in quite a few markets may have to do so after June 12 once those channel assignments get rearranged.

Our ABC affiliate will probably just keep calling itself "channel 7" from here on out even though its post-transition DTV channel assignment is really channel 11. The DTV tuners automatically associate the station's intended channel ID number, even if the actual channel is something else. Still, it's kind of strange. I don't know for certain if our market's NBC, FOX and CBS affiliates will stay put on their UHF assignments or if any will move back to previous VHF space.

The only one that turns off today locally is channel 12, which I am surprised still even exists. I checked last night well before midnight and the analog signal was gone and the digital one was present. I called every citizen in Colorado to discuss this, but nobody cared about channel 12.

Here in San Francisco, the local ABC station which operates on VHF-Hi Channel7 will continue to operate on that frequency after the final DTV switch.

This totally TOTALLY confuses me since I thought one of the reasons for this whole frickin mess was to free up those frequencies, as well as freqs in the UHF band now occupied by channels 52-69. (not sure about the exact channel numbers. . I'd have to go back and read one of my previous posts, and you know how boring that is!.

But now I'm confused about why some are staying on VHF. [Confused]

It doesn't take nearly as much wattage to transmit an effective DTV signal on VHF as it does on UHF.

Our ABC affiliate has its DTV transmitter in Grandfield, OK set at a full power level of 138kW. They're broadcasting on channel 11, even though they'll still be calling themselves channel 7. The FOX affiliate in Wichita Falls, KJTL, broadcasts from the same tower in Grandfield. Their analog channel was already on UHF, channel 18. Their DTV signal is on channel 15. Since it's still UHF they're having to broadcast at 1000kW.

Well, three of our local stations weren't kidding. They followed through on their threat of executing those analog signals.

It was mildly fun to watch KSWO's analog signal go off the air. They interrupted Blues Traveler performing on the Jimmy Kimmel Live show to run a 1 minute countdown. When it expired the signal simply went to snow. No static slate stating, "you need a DTV converter box, dude." No fireworks. No celebration. Just snow -which can allow the demons from Poltergeist to invade homes everywhere.

WHO shut down their analog and KDSM went into nite lite mode at midnight with no fanfare, scroll, or warning whatsoever.

WHO-13 went back on the air in digital form about 2am. Their temporary channel 19 stayed on until then. I had to rescan this morning to get the "new" Channel 13.1, but all is well.

Everyone in Sacramento's still on the air. Channel 20 in San Francisco and 36 in San Jose were supposed to go off, but I'm still getting a signal from them but they aren't coming in strongly enough to see what they're showing, if anything.

Found a couple online videos, here's one that sounds like someone in Orlando had a party watching 3 stations die:

Were there any interesting signoffs (national anthem, etc.), or did the stations just cut to static?

I have Dish. All of my channels are still on the air. I couldn't give a flying crap about the antique analog stuff going away.

It's a new era! Go Digital!

Nothing fancy at our stations. Just a basic program interruption, countdown slate and then snow.

Annoyingly, the DTV switch has ruined our DTV reception.

We were using a home-made stacked bow-tie UHF antenna on top of a book shelf which worked well enough to pick up all DTV signals in our area, including some that were pretty far away. Now that they've switched to their "better" VHF transmitters the signals have gone to crap, even after adding a VHF folded dipole antenna.

Here in Atlanta, the only station to kill their analog channel was the PBS station on CH 8. They ran a breef informational video about the transition, then did a very nice sign off. The sign off began with a supper saying that they were ending analog broadcasting on that channel. Then there were lots of outdoor scenes of Georgia put to "Georgia on my Mind". Then an ending supper saying that they dedicate the video to the fond memories of analog broadcasting.

WGEM in Quincy IL went off at the end of their noon newscast with some bimbo turning off the transmitter on camera:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xuBxJ2QbikM&fmt=18

There's a few other interesting ones on YouTube if you look around, unfortunately a lot of them were recorded by pointing a camera at the TV. I've got an unused blank VHS tape so I might use that to tape the last hour of one of the stations here, probably KXTV because it has sucked the least of all the other stations in the area in recent years. I'll do it at my parents' house where they have a big outdoor antenna and get all the local stations in perfect.

My big problem with digital TV is most stations use too much compression- even though they run syndicated shows with no bug on the screen, the picture gets blocky when too many things move. Sub-channels make the picture even worse since they have to share the same amount of bits. Channel 29 over here has 3 sub-channels so all 4 of them look like crap; meanwhile they never got stereo for their analog station.
