They have a 4096x2160 chip. Try searching 4k sxrd and you fill find plenty of links. The protoype with 10000 lumens was shown yesterday and will be shown again at Infocom. A further developed version will be shown in October. They hope to deliver projectors early in 2005 so they mean business.

Let's go back to the price comparisons beginning with the approximate $350/week to supply a film theatre with a print (presuming this to be the typical cost of a print and delivery over a typical first run engagement).

What number should we use for comparison for the cost of a typical (new) 35mm projector & soundhead, say Simplex? $15K? And maybe $4K for a platter? We should ignore the lamp since D-cinema requires those as well. Ditto everything in the auditorium and the amps in the soundrack. Projectors have a lifetime measured in decades. Even if we're conservative it's probably fair to spread the cost over 30 years. For sound things evolve and change more rapidly so would you agree to maybe $10K over 10 years? Keep in mind we're only talking about those components particular to film presentation & playback.

20K over 30 years is about $13/wk.
10K over 10 years is about 10/wk.

So maybe about $375 a week for film.

What numbers are we expecting for d-cinema when/if it goes mass? $100K? More? What lifetime is expected?

100K over 5 years is already $385/wk.

Help me with the accuracy of these estimates.

and multiply that by an average screen count of 14 per location if every theater was to go digital and you have.

$5,250 for film

$5,390 Just for the digital projectors not counting costs for the method of delivery of movie content.

I don't see any advantage to making the comparison on a the basis of a multiplex rather than per screen.

Don't forget to add in the increased cost of operation and maintenance. For example, if the light efficiency is less, you need a larger lamp (shorter life, higher price) and more electricity.

As a former cinema client told me he could afford the extra power cost vs manpower cost [uhoh]

Perhaps some of you remember the rumor about how TI can increase the resolution to almost 4k using a 2k chip. They can use an optical shift likely diagonally and project multiple subframes to reach 4k. My original speculation was a horizontal shift of a 2048x2160 dmd image.

Using this method TI can go from 2048x1080 to 4096x2160. The latter is the DCI 4k standard. This would also remove the pixel structure and make the image smooth.
- no visible pixels
- higher resolution
- equal brightness

I wonder who was first to patent this, TI or HP? HP are working on wobulation, see link

I have seen this revolutionary "Wobulation" process and have posted below a picture of the test pattern directly from the screen:

Phil
I am sorry but I can not tell if your post is serious or not.

About this wobulation and dlp in general I think it will make pixel structure a non issue and I think few will complain about the resolution. The technology might fall short on some other parameters that are important for picture quality. The digital nature at the heart of it all will probably manifest somehow but how visible will it be and to how many?
Who cares it will cost too much anyway.

Mattias: Sorry for the confusion. It's a bogus "joke" post. As you read more at FT, you will understand my weird sense of humor. Good or Bad, most everyone here have figured me out! All except Mr. Redifer. [Smile]

This applies to other systems besides DLP so Sony for example could use it to go to 8K.

Perhaps Sony can choose to wobulate too and I think that sxrd technology is fast enough to function in such a mode. However Sony probably does not have to use this technology. It will add cost to dlp projectors if TI add this technology to their big screen projectors.
