Author Topic: Trinnov Audio - OVATION digital cinema processor Mike Babb Master Film Handler Posts: 250 From: Norwich UK Registered: Jul 2002 posted 06-14-2016 02:12 AM                        Marco, I don't use Smaart myself, I use the D2, I believe Smaart has some of the functionality but this software is in the box, and much more tailored to cinema. I like the HDMI on the AP20, but I never really embraced the Dirac. I had better results, to my ears anyway, using third octave or parametric and the D2. Working with both processors, it's not apples to apples. The result is always affected by the acoustic (which is time BTW) and the D2 or Smaart (and finally your ears) are always there to help. Surely the Trinnov seems to integrate all the bits that Smaart has but tailored for the cinema world. The point is that with Smaart you can do an EQ time-minded on any sound processor, not just the Trinnov. If you invest in the Trinnov, then the 8 mikes and the advanced software is only available if you have an Ovation installed.  |  IP: Logged Mike Babb Master Film Handler Posts: 250 From: Norwich UK Registered: Jul 2002 posted 06-14-2016 01:25 PM                        All I can say to that is I heard about it, looked into it, did some training sessions, and have had some hands on time, the results impressed me and everyone who heard it. As a sidenote though, I did get my D2 mics calibrated in France so I can use them for Trinnov, haven't tried it yet but in theory the calibration should be just as valid. And finally, the reason I really chased this down is to learn more and get better at what I do. So, time alignment becomes part of my routine with other brands of processors, I will certainly follow that path when I can, and I have a Smaart license on my computer anyway. I already know it won't be quite the same, because the options and parameters aren't the same, but thinking in time before frequency is the way forward.  |  IP: Logged Marco Giustini Film God Posts: 2713 From: Reading, UK Registered: Nov 2007 posted 06-14-2016 01:56 PM                     it's always been. It's never done! I want to clarify that I am not saying that time alignment is not needed and I don't like when sound is done in 15 minutes by dialling the XCurve and walking away. Just saying that that is what normally happens. It was one of my accounts for a while but I have not had the chance to check out the new build. I've serviced or seen the booth of almost every NA site around the Boston area. I found Louis's automation to be extremely trouble free.
