I didn't witness any of it, but the current story circulating the management staff is about the woman who couldn't hold herself.

She had to leave her movie and couldn't get to the restroom in time before she severely soiled herself. Even though she claims that it was totally embarassing for her, she made her complaint to every manager she encountered. She wanted passes and this-and-that, and for the company to pay for the cleaning bill because, after all, it was OUR HOT DOG that made her do it.

Friday 16th December, around 19:45: I'm at the front of house helping check customers tickets while the regular floor staff are cleaning up after a busy show of Chronicles Of Narnia.

As a promotional thing we are giving away a cheap-and-nasty binocular with children's tickets for King Kong. At this time the adverts and trailers are nearly finished with about 5 minutes before the film starts.

A few seconds after handing 2 of these (in boxes) to a family of 2 adults and 2 children, one of the children (a girl, about 9 years old) asks me:

Girl: "Are these for watching the film with?"
Me: "No, they are just for fun."

Ho-hum.

Ever have a moment when you don't know is someone is trying to be funny or just incredibly stupid?

I had a woman come up to me in the lobby of the theater this weekend and ask, "excuse me, but is there a theater around here called the Polaris 18?" Which I greeted with a courteous laugh and smile at what I thought was a bad joke, (since she was standing in the lobby of the Polaris 18). However, she was serious and somewhat offended.

Couple I can think of off hand.

Situation: Brainwrap, movie shuts down

Me: (Going into the theatre) "Sorry everyone, all of you will be given passes to come see a free movie another time due to the film shutting down. The projectionist is currently fixing the problem and the show should be up again very shortly"

Random person from audience: "There's a person that runs the movies?? I thought all this stuff was just done by computers!"

................................
Situation: Customer complains the sound is too loud.

Me: (Makes phone call up stairs on mobile Intercom phone) "OK sir, it should be good now, the projectionist turned it down"

Customer: (whole time has been standing at theatre door holding it open) "I can still here it from here, it's way too loud!"

At this time a manager happened to hear this and explained how you will always hear a movie from the lobby..... (well at least in our building it's like this)

.............................

This is my favorite...

Customer: "I'd like a refill on my popcorn please" (Holding a promotional bag from a movie no longer playing)

Me: "I'm sorry sir, we only give refills on popcorn that was sold today"

Customer: "Exuse me? I bought this today! Are you calling me a lier?"

Me: "Last time we sold bags like that was 2 months ago, these are the ones we've had since then"

Customer: Says nothing, turns and walks away.

Last weekend a chronic complainer came in and asked for a receipt for her medium drink and large popcorn.

Tonight one of my staff confused an elderly couple. It was FAAAANtastic!
First the set up: Our senior/child ticket is same as matinee, $5.
Matinee is any show starting before 6pm.
These two come to see the 5pm Walk The Line and ask for 2 seniors.
The cashier for no good reason tries to correct them.
Cashier: Everyone is matinee before 6
Guest: Don't we get a senior price?
Cashier: No. Everything is $5 before 6.(confusion begins)
Guest: But you have a senior price don't you?
Cashier: Yes, it's $5. Is that two for Walk The Line?
Guest: Oh, ok. Yes.

Me: *sigh*

We have a Monday discount night where we lower the adult price. The kids price stays the same. Sometimes people will ask why the kids don't get a discount -- we tell them the kids ALWAYS get a discount. Solves it every time.

That's exactly my point, Mike.
In your case your guest asked the question, you answered it with exactly what they wanted to hear.
But when your senior price is the same as matinee and they ask for two seniors for a matinee show shouldn't you just say ok and not try and educate them?
It just seems so much easier.

Yes sell them the correct *priced* ticket. Who cares what it's classed as. The ticket seller should be wacked up side the head for causing confusion.

On some occassions, we give out a gift bucket. It's a small popcorn bucket that has about $12 worth of candy, plus two tickets good for any show. We get people receiving these gift buckets trying to get a free refill on the bucket. We are amazed, since they got $27 worth of free stuff shoved by hand into that bucket, and always explain that we can't refill it.

My current peeve is the customer who thinks he/she knows more than you do about your job and how to run your booth:

Today a grass fire (big problem right now in Texas and Oklahoma) caused a transformer to blow near where I work. The resulting blast knocked power out all over town, but we managed to stay online with a few brown-outs. Unfortunately, the sound processors on all my screens rebooted to non-sync while the movies continued to run. So I'm having to run my ass off and quickly kick the sound back over to Digital on each sound rack. Some of them were too far gone to kick over and had to be reset at the breaker level. Ends up taking about ten minutes to get everything back to working order.

So later on I find out one of the managers had a customer defiantly argue that the sound went out because I misframed a splice and it "confused" the processor. This customer thought the darkening of the screen (caused by the brownout) was CLEAR PROOF I had made a mistake in building the movie and that I should be fired on the spot. No matter how much the manager tried to explain he was wrong about that, the guy kept barking about how he was right because he'd been a projectionist for years and a manager too. Other customers overheard this guy barking at the manager and mentioned they thought he was an idiot and a jerk after the guy left with passes in hand.

Several times customers have wanted my head because of an act of nature like a storm knocking the power out, or no surround working during a dialog scene. Its these same types of idiots that later write up an article talking about projectionists working up to eight screens because platters don't exist.

That same guy might have been in little rock recently. I overheard a customer daying that the surrounds weren't on because the projectionist built the movie wrong.

Guess he should have used the "surround" splicer.

Read something weird in the newspaper today:

In the "Wulfenia Kinozentrum" (6 plex movie theater in Klagenfurt, Austria) there were two little boys (10 and 6 years) and a 8 year old girl watching a movie. During the movie the 10 year old dropped some popcorn on the ground (accidentally!!).
This caused a man between 40 and 50 to hit those children. The police is currently looking for him.

Why on Earth would a man hit some children for losing some popcorn??? [Confused]

I just love it when people buy tickets to an R-rated film and then come out halfway through and ask for their money back because they didn't like the language. First they ask for their refund and I say "I'm sorry, what was wrong with the film?" They reply "We didn't like the language." My response is always "Well, it is rated R" Of course, you always have to bite the bullet and just hand out the refund to keep your customers happy.

I'd have to disagree on that one. We have people coming out wanting passes because they didn't like the movie. too bad. You should have done your homework before paying money to see it. Unless theres a presentation problem (act of god or otherwise), we don't issue passes to people who just dont like the movie.
