Regal now has every theatre in the area except for a 10 screen Carmike and the Byrd. The Commonwealth 20 was by far the best m'plex in the area both for the facility and presentation.  |  IP: Logged Scott D. They will be closing (and selling) their 7-plex from the 1980s. It is supposed to be open next spring. From a competition standpoint, I'm actually glad to hear this because Billings was ripe for a new complex, and if somebody was going to build one I'm glad it was Carmike and not a company with a local manager who would actually run it well.  |  IP: Logged Brandon Willis Expert Film Handler Posts: 216 From: Richmond, VA, USA Registered: Apr 2004 posted 06-17-2008 03:36 PM                     Regal ran the smaller plexes, the Chesterfield, Chester, and Southpark. The Chesterfield was built by UA and taken over by Regal in the merger. The Chester and Southpark both changed hands a billion times before being bought out by Regal in the mid 90s. All 3 of them were dives from the 80s that felt like you were watching the movie in a storage closet. On a related note, the UA West Tower in the west end of town has just had all of its exterior signage replaced with "Regal Cinemas 10." Regal has not, however, replaced the signage on the Consolidated Commonwealth 20 in the South side.  |  IP: Logged Paul Van Dusen Film Handler Posts: 82 From: Roanoke, VA Registered: Feb 2006 posted 06-18-2008 02:30 PM                        I was talking to one of our vendors yesterday, and he said the Commonwealth 20 has taken a nose dive as far a cleanliness. He was walking behind their concession stand to service a frozen drink machine and was walking in water and popcorn that almost came over his foot. I'm kinda hoping this will be a trend now that the Carmike there has a new manager, it will give her a chance to win back the people that previous managers scared off. Syracuse is growing like a weed... remember Utah didn't suffer that Mortgage problem. One screen there is 65 feet wide and sports JBL 5674 stage speakers in baffles. This is the 8th location we've used the 5674's at. Absolutely amazing speakers! Of course its got an all Christie/Dolby/QSC booth but this time its all rebuilt P-35GP's instead of new, three of the P-35's came from a fellow Film-Techer. The round tooth pulley kits really work well!!! The theatre opened in 1921 and was the last full time single screen theatre in northern NJ. I've never heard of Touchstar, but this information did come to me via a reporter from a newspaper. Touchstar Cinemas now lists the location as one of theirs on their website, but Regal lists it as well. Is Regal dumping some of their underperforming locations? There is no news item in the local media about this change that I can find. Many people locally have wondered if the Madison Square 12 or Carmike 10 were going to close because of the nearby Monaco 14 opening back on November 16, 2007.  |  IP: Logged Robert Crabtree Film Handler Posts: 91 From: Largo, FL Registered: May 2008 posted 06-25-2008 01:42 AM                     That's a possibility, cause with all sorts of upgrades in the works, Regal could use the extra cash. The webpage lists 9 locations to be upgraded with an IMAX, 4 new locations in the works (2 to be IMAX), and a couple to get updated with stadium seating. Having to divvy up the movies with the local Carmike probably made it extra expendable. If it hadn't recently bought up Consolidated, I'd wonder if Regal was in the process of snatching up more properties. As was the case with Consolidated, Regal let go some of its pre-existing properties to avoid monopolies in some areas. Don't know anything about Rave, which would be the likeliest culprit in that case.  |  IP: Logged Mike Olpin Chop Chop! If Regal is listing it with showtimes on their site, TouchStar isn't... Thomas Procyk used to work for TouchStar, I went to a few of those theatres when I was down there. Nothing special. An old GCC and an old Regal in Orlando. Looking at Rave's page on Theatre Amenities, it SOUNDS like a decent parcel of theatres. One thing Consolidated lacked on was any digital projectors, which Rave looks to have in spades...which would explain why they're up for sale. I wonder what the official takeover date was, since I'd like to have it on my "historical information" section. I'm guessing that since the theatre changed hands with no announcement to the media, or no fanfare, they'll just continue running the theatre in the condition it was in, and it will likely continue to be just as mediocre. The reporter I talked to the other day said that he thought Regal might be exiting the Alabama market. Have any other Regal theatres in the state closed or changed hands lately? I hope Regal doesn't buy Rave because the experience at the Rave theatre is so much better than anywhere else in town.  |  IP: Logged
