What does it matter it's BCG? In thier minds people dont come to see the movie they come to buy food, or at least that's the impression you would get being in one of thier theatres.
Well, the reason to post it is because it is a news story. Second of all, The only thing BCG cares about is $ (their money)..and nothing else..The only difference in this case is that they only had to pay off one owners part of the business..the other owner owed them money, so in typical BCG fashion, they just took his part of it. I also think that Beth Desmarais was ready to retire, she had her parents inheritance and she didn't need to be there every weekend working.

Oh come on. They didn't "just take it." He/she owed them money and clearly since he/she was unable to provide actual money to pay off said debt he/she gave them their part of the business. It's not them "taking his shit" but is him making good on his debt.

BCG is known for lending money to people who want to build movie theatres and then they "recoup" their investment by taking over the theatre when the owner cannot repay all or some of their money, even if it means not getting the whole amount that was borrowed. That's how they built their empire of 23 theatres. If you went to one of their theatres 20 years ago, and then revisited it today, nothing inside of the building would have changed. When I was at Tri-Boro we used to say that the only thing new in the building was the popcorn and the candy that we were selling at the concession stand.

I don't see how that refutes anything I said. If you get a loan and can't pay it back in the specified time, this is what happens. It makes no difference if the "loaner" is this company, some person, or the bank.

Chris,
You don't need to be putting words in my mouth, I wasn't trying to "refute" you. I was actually responding to sean's post. I hadn't even see your post until after I had posted the one after sean's.

Of course you didn't see mine until after that post (I made mine as a direct response to your's and showed this by quoting you).

Though I must've jumped the gun and thought the one after mine was a response to mine. Oops.

edit: Though I still don't see what they're doing that's at all shady like you implied. This would all be specified in the contract between them.

Chris,

I can see how if you are not familiar with this company you might defend them thinking they are reputable. This comapny is known for operating like a loan shark. They lend people who dont know any better and have little to no experience money to open theatres on ridiculous terms and then reposess the theatre when the poor slob can't repay the loan. The then run these theatres as cheaply and poorly as possible. This compony is well known for "Film Done Wrong" and do not deserve anyone defending them. In my opinion this company takes money from hard working people and gives them in return an inferior product that is not worth the money that they paid. BCG SUCKS! BCG=FILM DONE WRONG!

Sad.

Edit:
And Paul,

I'm pretty sure then that Sean originally was saying "What does it matter if it's BCG?" to say "Who cares if a crappy chain looses a theater?"

I meant "Who cares if the booth was damaged it is a BCG theatre they'll stay open and just charge people to come in and look at the individual frames on the print" Actually, if they did that it would probably look better than what they put on screen in most of thier locations.

Carmike has sold the Hermitage Plaza 8 in Hermitage, PA and the new ownership has temporarily closed it for some well overdue care. It was DLP equipped and had a staff of about 20. It might reopen this year minus the digital units.
Doors reopened on Friday, May 30 for the 5:00 and 7:00 sets. The original Century film projectors were brought out of storage, re-installed and ran great! All eight screens were lit with approximately 200 people in total attendance - mostly seeing "The Strangers".

The old box office in the center of the lobby has been removed and all tickets are now being sold in the concession stand. Given the size of the common area and make-up of the stand, this make absolute sense. Admission prices and concession items are the same as offered by Shenango Valley Cinemas across town.

What is noteworthy about Cinema 8 is that this is the first digital un-install in favor of returning to film that we know of. I have not made a big issue about it on the forums because I don't have all the information, but perhaps we could start a separate thread about that if indeed it becomes a trend.

Also, special thanks to Scott Woodruff who worked tirelessly (and mostly by himself) re-installing the film equipment. An A+ job, as always!

Why don't they just open the theatres on their own and not lose the money through the inexperienced operator? Why would they even bother with someone like that when it only means they'll lose a good chunk of their investment? I don't see how they benefit from that arrangement.

Because, in many cases, by the time they take the theatre over, they've already recouped their entire investment and then some.

Right, they take 55% of the concession revenue for a period of time and then decide at some point they want the rest of thier money in a lump sum. When the theatre owner cannot make the payment they reposess the theatre and operate it themselves after already making back most of thier initial investment. Basically say it cost 1 million to open a theatre... they end up getting the theatre for only 250,000.00.

Hi everyone, I haven't been on here in a while. I have an update on some theatres in my area which are now entirely controlled by Regal. Regal closed down 3 of them last summer and opened one. The Southpark 16 is Regal's newest theatre in the area and is a standard issue Regal build attached to a large regional shopping mall. Regal also closed down some old run-of-the mill shopping center plexes around here. The Chesterfield 9, Chester 6, and Southpark 6 (which the Southpark 16 replaced) are all now gone. All 3 of them had shoebox auditoriums with the aisle down the middle and were a couple of decades old.
