Astor Cinema Perth Australia closing after 97 years

THE curtains are about to close on the Astor Theatre, ending a 97-year history of movies and entertainment.
The Astor Cinema on Beaufort St, Mt Lawley, will shut in less than three weeks because it is no longer profitable.
The Dark Knight, starring Perth's late Heath Ledger, will be the last screening on August 27.
Cinema manager Tania Ilarda said her father, Bruno Zimmermann, the owner of the building, could hardly get the words out when he told her he planned to close.
"It was the hardest decision I've ever seen him make,'' she said. ``Dad's a tough person, he grew up during the war, but he could hardly speak when he told me on Tuesday night.''
Mrs Ilarda said the cinema had been running at a loss for some time, with just $34 in takings in four hours of trading to 1pm last Monday.
"Half of that goes to the distributor. What's left is not even enough for an hour's wages,'' she said.
"We've had our good times, but it's hard for us to get movies competing with the big franchise cinemas.

The heritage-listed art deco building opened in 1911. It was originally known as the Lyceum
Theatre and was designed by architect D. McClure and built by S. Alexander.
The name was later changed to the State Theatre, before becoming the Astor Theatre in 1941.
Ten staff will lose their jobs when the cinema shuts.
Richard Williams and Glenys Brown have been loyal patrons at the Astor for more than 20 years.
"I'm absolutely devastated. It's been a big part of my leisure activities for many years,'' Mr Williams said.

Mayor hopes projects like River District will move Eagle out of Boise's shadow
Drivers along Idaho 44 in Eagle have seen the big black signs with white writing since January, trying to entice them to live, work and play by the Boise River.
In two weeks the dirt will fly for an office building, part of the River District project that includes shops, eateries, businesses and houses. Construction on Ogden Entertainment Group's 14-screen movie theater with a movie studio will begin in October. The company said it will reveal more details about the complex later.
The developers purchased the land from the Lonesome Dove Ranch in 2006, and have quietly been working on sewer, water and city approval since, as well as on a partnership with a second large development called Eagle Gateway South.
"We just hope that we've put enough thought and creativity into it to bring something that will be equally pleasing to the community" as the ranch was, said Cord Christensen, of C&C Development, a partner in the project. "We feel very good that even in a market that's tough, if you have good architecture, good amenities, you'll sell."
The construction of higher-density houses and mixed-use near the river has been a concern for some residents, but Eagle Mayor Phil Bandy says the city is beginning to change in an effort to become more than Boise's bedroom community.
"The intent is to build a multi-use area down by the river," Bandy said. "It needs to provide as many amenities as it can to bring those amenities closer to home. It will take traffic off State Street and Eagle Road. It should provide employment opportunities for people so that they can ride or walk to work."
RBC Wealth Management will be one of the first tenants moving into the office building. Managing director Brian King said it was hard to find the office space and amenities his company needed in Boise.
"The package that the River District put in front of us is really a good value. We're excited about the move," he said.
