New movie theater complex to open in North Londonderry Square shopping center
Flagship Cinemas plans to open in August or September in the former Cinema Center complex.

PALMYRA >> A new movie theater complex is moving into the North Londonderry Square shopping center, and its owners promise amenities like no other theater in the area.
Massachusetts-based Flagship Cinemas has purchased the former Cinema Center and hopes to reopen the complex in late August or early September after extensive renovations.
It will be more of an upscale complex with a lobby that resembles a hotel lobby, said Paul Wenger, vice president of Flagship Cinemas.
"The texture and the fixtures that we're putting in are more of a hotel-like environment, not your traditional 'Barnum and Bailey-type' look," he said. "We have cinemas like that, but this is a new prototype that we're doing. In fact, this has become very popular throughout the country right now and it's being received very well."
The complex will open with eight screens initially, but will eventually expand to 12 screens, Wenger said.
Some of the amenities include electrical reclining seats, all-digital projection, 5.1 sound and self-serve sodas and popcorn toppings.
The seats are what will really set the complex apart from others in the area, Wenger said. All the seats will be electric-powered leather recliners.
"They're like La-Z-Boy chairs," he said. "These are not traditional theater chairs."
The complex's theaters will have substantially fewer seats than traditional theaters because the chairs are bigger, and there will be more space between rows.
"You're going to have a theater with 80 chairs where every chair is going to be an optimal experience," Wenger said. "When you have a regular theater, and you go when it's packed, you wind up sitting in a chair that has terrible sight-lines, or you're jammed in a corner."
There will be several two-seat private booths with small tables at the back of each theater.
All seats and headrests are anti-microbial and will be wiped down between all shows, Wenger said.
The complex will offer reserved seating; When ordering tickets online or at the box officer, patrons will have the option of selecting what seat they want from available seats, Wenger said.
The complex will also have a party area that can be rented for special occasions, such as birthdays. It includes a kitchenette and dining area and a small small "home-theater-type" area. Families can bring their own DVDs to watch if there is not a suitable movie playing at the theater at the time.
The complex's ticket prices will be competitive with others in the area, Wenger said.
"We don't charge a premium," he said. "We'll be on par or less than the local guys. But we're not necessarily trying to compete with them. We're trying to create a whole new market, which we're finding that this concept is doing."
Founded in 1995, Flagship has 12 theaters in seven states on the east coast. The next closest is in Mechanicsburg, Cumberland County.
The 12-screen Cinema Center closed its doors in July 2009 after 11 years in business. Company officials said newer theaters, including 10-screen Great Escape Theatres at the Lebanon Valley Mall and the seven-screen CocoaPlex in Derry Township, overwhelmed the family-owned Cinema Center. Regal Entertainment Group purchased Great Escape Theaters in 2012.
