Ok it is time for me to open my mouth or my fingers as the case may be...since  is away finishing up the new Cinema West Los Banos Some of you I have met over the past few years at ShoWest others I have either worked with or for..GO Scott Neff Theatre history ...worked for Cinema West either as a Theatre Manager or Assistant Manager....also since I worked the smaller places I was also trained to handle film, although I no longer do.... I am a newbie to this forum and this is my first post. I think this would be a good starting point. My name is to the left. I was born in the theatre business. My father and mother owned three theatres in Texas until 1958. My father taught me about the booth at a young age. I was totaly hooked on the equipment. I tried my best later to get into the booth, but jobs were hard to come by. I started out at a twin theatre in Longview, Texas as projectionist. Automated booth running 6K reels. I moved from this position after 2 years to Assit. manager for GCC and later to Manager.
I left that job to go in the military. I repaired navigation equipment on HH-53 Green Giant helicopers, WC-135 and C-130 aircraft. I fell out of one of the helicopers in 1984 and that ended my career in the military. I did work for a local theatre chain about 2 years, but could not continue with my bad back.
I went to college and got an AA in Film and TV production. I was a board operator for a local FM station for 3 1/2 years. I have since retired. The only thing I do now is complain about the bad presentation at the Regal cinemas here in Spokane. I think film done right stopped at the city limits in this city. i have offered my knowledge to help the film handlers, but no response. So for now they will continue to scratch and tear-up film after only one showing. It's a shame.

My hobbies include Amateur Radio (W7AFB), photography and the computer. I restore old photos as well as editing them. I was film collecting, but hard times forced the sale of most. I have a full length 35mm feature titled "SANTA CLAUSE" came out in early 80's. I also have "TEENAGE THUNDER" B&W 35mm. I have worked several different makes and models of equipment. I will always be attached to the booth. I enjoyed giving the best possible presentation. In the last few months I have followed this site and all of you have contributed to my knowledge. I only wish more theatre people would join this forum.

Hi everybody. I've been lurking for a few months, just registered. I am tech director for a 490 seat mainly live theatre on the Big Island of Hawaii.
I've been here on and off for about ten years. I got hooked on projection in the early 80s in Banff AB at a theatre school; worked tech for a professional children's theatre company in Honolulu, then moved here. I opened and was house projection and tech for Consolidated 's (Pacific) Keauhou 7 in Kona for 2-1/2 years, and last year came back to Kahilu Theatre (they asked). We do second-runs on weekends when live shows are not scheduled. Our gear(mostly used):
Christie P35C/CH10 w/SLC upgrade, Kelmar analog reverse-scan red LED (brand-new), Kintek KT-700(don't laugh), JBL 4675 screen speakers, some old JBL studio monitors for surround, a homebrew subwoofer, and a 13' x 31' gain screen. I'll post pictures soon. I try really hard for good presentation. The nearest first-run houses are 40 and 55 miles away, so there is an audience. We try to book a variety of films, but it's tricky working around the live events. Thanks for a great site.

K. Gordon Murray had a movie called "Santa Claus" in the mid 60s, which was a W.German import (no "E" on the end... that was the Tim Allen starrer, as in a contractual clause). I believe the Murray children's matinee stuff was four-walled. I know you said early 80s, but the four-walling made me think of Murray. Now that would be a pretty rare flick. ------------------

Aloha to you Claude, and to everyone,
Most of our equipment is indeed ex-Consolidated. I know Alan Sakaida quite well. Our projector & console are from the Pearlridge 4. We run a Miniwind 3, that thanks to the Tips forum has been grooved and re-timed; it works great. The Kintek has the SVA card, so it is at least making a stab at decoding Dolby A. The LED reader I installed a few weeks ago does show up the high frequency harshness of the Kintek, but the imaging and crosstalk are much improved.
I remember seeing films in most of the theatres in Honolulu when I was growing up; the Kuhio before they twinned it (beautiful), Waikiki #3 before the papier-mache tropical foliage was taken out, Princess, King, Queen, Kaimuki, Kapuhulu, Kapiolani (I saw Chushingura [47 Ronin] and Dune there). All except Waikiki 3 are gone now.
On the Big Island, in Kona there is the Keauhou 7 (Consolidated) 6 miles south of Kona, and Wallace's Makalapua 10 in Kona. On the other side of the island, in Hilo there is only Wallace with a 9-screen in the Prince Kuhio Plaza mall, and 4 screens in the old Kress building downtown. Independents include the Palace in downtown Hilo, the People's Theatre in Honokaa, Kahilu Theatre here in Kamuela, the Aloha Theatre in Kainaliu south of Kona, and the Southern Star in Naalehu.
Working for a nonprofit, I am gradually trying to improve the film experience for our audience. The next step is a better processor; the Kintek is doing about all it can. Future improvements include better and more surrounds, a 2k console, and acoustic treatment to the back wall of the auditorium. In the last few months lurking, I have learned so much from these forums, I want to thank everyone and especially Brad for providing this resource to everyone who loves "Film done right".
