It's doubtful that a sprocket starting and stopping would be a similar stress and even if it was, what way would the domains align since it's either in motion or stops in any of 4 positions? Try your hammering experiment with the metal in similar motion or reoriented positions. That the bar is of cylindrical cross section doesn't change things much. But that's neither here nor there since we are talking about a non magnetized sprocket possibly acquiring magnetization.  |  IP: Logged Mark J.
