I live in a little village just outside Hereford, England, and work with Jonathan Worthing (although I live on the better side of town !!) Have to admit to spending more than an average amount of time drinking in our local pub which is 50 yards from our house. Met some of you, will no doubt meet some more - maybe at cinema expo (another thread, another day), or cine-asia. I hereby admit to being Canadian, part of a cinema service company with a Toronto office (where I am) and a branch in Edmonton. Have worked in cinemas for 24 year, starting from the Foh upwards to senior at one point. 8 years on the floor, 16 in the boxes. Last 15 in therapy Special greetings to Duncan, Hi Duncan, This is Robin, remember me from when we worked together at Southend. Now work in a another cinema with South in it's name -South Woodford!! It's 7 screen 5 boxes split levels, basically all over the place!! Call in one day and have a look. Only 1036 seats in all, the business we do - unbelievable. Used to be a joke about Southend at one time. If you droped a bomb on it, you could have wiped out most of the projectionists in the east of england cinema. Southend seems to breed them. I started at the Ritz Cinema in Chatham, Kent in 1969 as a trainee, you know make the tea, clean the box floor but don't touch the machines....we had a Chief projectionist, a co-chief, a second, a fourth and little old me....those were the days. Here we are over thirty years later, I'm now an ex-projectionist and missing it, but I can remember all the great places I've worked including for a while in the seventies The National Film Theatre on Londons South Bank. I live in Auckland which is in the northern part of the North Island. I've seen one or two changes in my working life. I started on Ernemann fours with Western Electric universal bases and those wonderful motor control boxes. When a valve (vacuum tube) failed, it certainly paced up the action on the screen. Now, I sit in a Quantel edit suite. The technology doesn't drip oil, the carbon tip never drops off, and it never loses the loop on the take up sprocket on start up.
