I beat her out of a number of dailies jobs in past years!! I never found X-L's to be a very good dailies machine.... The retracted listing means that she got another Dailies job with some DP that hates looking at digital! Those X-Ls may have been the ones I used on Casino, except they had 1.2K ORC lamphouses on them back then. Had to work on both of them a bit to get them to look their best (re-mount both lamps square on-axis, replace a broken fiber gear, build and add my own changeovers, true up one gate rail, restore the threading lamp wiring on both, re-wire the monitor volume pot on one, correct the color temperature on one lamp). Om locations the Simplex Gates are also VERY noisy... you generally haev a very high number of splices going through on a given reel, especially on rough cuts. Both Century C and Norelco FP's are far better in the steadiness department and it was much easier to to keep them to better than spec in all regards. I can tell you stories of running camera steadiness test films on the Centurys that even blew away the DP's!! A good example of how steady C models are was back when they did the shootout between DLP and film and the film won. They used an old Century C for that..... Both the 4 star and 5 star sound heads are not very well adaptable to mag as are both the FP-20 or Century R-3, at least if you want really high quality mag playback with wow and flutter specs that meet SMPTE.... been there worked with them all and the R-8 beats em all. The X-L rock and roll machines are probably the worst dailies machines ever conceived!! I also like that the lenses were bought straight from Schneider (not likely) unless he paid list price (possibly the reason for the inflated price or perhaps he just is looking at the list price sheet somewhere).  |  IP: Logged
