This book contains a wonderful essay which does a complete hatchet job on Princess Di. It characterises her a selfish, upper class spoilt cow, who wallowed in insincere self-pity, mainly for the benefit of her bank balance (and pointing out that although Prince Charles was repeatedly vilified in public for conducting an extra-marital affair, Di did so as well and no-one seemed to mind that). Like many on this thread, the author makes the point that the outpouring of morbid sentimentality which followed her death was more the result of the emotional needs of the 'mourners' than sympathy for the deceased.
I couldn't agree with the writer more: during the week leading up to her funeral, I felt like some sort of pariah for just not being interested in the hullabaloo at all. For those who knew her or had some sort of direct connection with her or her work it was a tragedy, certainly: but for those who didn't and hadn't, it wasn't relevant. I didn't experience any grief whatsoever at her death, for the simple reason that I'd had nothing to do with her during her life. Yet when I expressed this view to some people, their reaction was to ask how I could be so callous and uncaring, etc. etc. Personally I find it bizarre that some people clearly feel the need to engage on that deep an emotional level with someone they've never even met or had any interaction with: but presumably that's what the cult of celebrity is all about.

Jason, you brute! Not only is that wrong, it's tasteless, discusting, demeaning, vulgar, uncouth, improper, offensive, and down right sleazy ...but really funny!
