We just spent a week in the mountains together and had a great time. It's a long road, but todays Doctors can do amazing things! Best of luck, John! This past week I met with my cardiologist for a follow-up treadmill EKG stress test to clear me for cardiac rehab, and had an upper GI with "small bowel follow-through" (several "yummy" thick barium "milkshakes" ) Next week I meet with the Gastroenterologist to discuss the results, and an oncologist in case chemotherapy will be needed in addition to surgery.  |  IP: Logged Bob Jones Film Handler Posts: 47 From: Atlanta, GA Registered: Jun 2003 posted 10-01-2006 08:17 PM                     John - Just now seeing the post - hope you are doing well. My dad was diagnosed with Ampulla of Vater cancer - (the area where the bile duct and pancreatic duct meet) - which is also a very rare cancer. It seems the main course of action for cancer in that area is the Whipple Procedure -- which is a very major surgery. After a lot of investigative research - he had his surgery in July - and is recovering very well. We were lucky to have connected with several others who had similar cirsumstances - including one who had the surgery and turned us on to a special anesthesia procedure that greatly helped post-op pain management. I'm not sure what type of procedure you are having - but would be glad to share our knowledge. Sometimes they don't make the decision on chemotherapy until after the surgery since what they see will give indication of possibility for spread. My wife has come though two surgeries this year: the first removing a bone tumor near her knee (now has an artificial knee and lots of metal in place of bone), the second to remove all of her female plumbing which was the source of the cancer. Then 4 months of chemotherapy, with all of its side effects. But I'm here to tell you, these medical folks can do exceptional things and give lots of reasons for hope. They they seem to have all the bases covered and you are in good hands; that's great. "Early detection" -- if ever there was good news in the midst of bad news, that's it.
