Just paid $4.20 here for regular. The pumps also still 'auto-shutoff' at $75, which leaves me only 3/4 full. I have to re-swipe the credit card to keep going.

I am now paying $3.85 a gallon for premium gas and by summer, prices here in Honolulu should exceed $4.00. Prices on Maui is already over that amount and still going up. Thank God, Honolulu has one of the best transportation system in the country and I use it a lot with my $30.00 a year senior citizen bus pass. I now use my car only when I go out on assignments and ride the bus when I visit my 89 year old mother everyday at her nursing home and my three times a week visit to my color lab in Honolulu. Estimated amount I have saved by riding the bus is a little over a hundred dollars a month.

Is anyone running a diesel engine on waste vegetable oil?
Several weeks ago I saw a story on the TV news about a guy here in Northern California who was doing this. Seemed like a good idea at the time.

The other day, I saw a "follow-up" story on the same guy.
Apparantly, ever since he went public and appeared on TV, his life has become a living hell.

> The state & feds have sent him a bill for not paying road taxes, which are normally paid when you buy gasoline. He can appeal the amount, but he must provide documentation proving how many miles he's driven. He was told that failure to pay could result in prosecution for tax evasion.

> The state said that becuase he is filtering the oil at home and then burning it in a motor vehicle, he is in effect operating a refinery without the required permits.

But wait- there's more!
> They also said that it's illegal to drive around picking up waste vegetable oil from restaurants, etc without having some sort of "waste oil transport" permit. To continue to do this, he must obtain a permit as well as get about a million dollars of insurance in case he spills any and it needs "hazardous waste clean-up"

>The California air quality board said that he also needs to have his mixture "certified" by them (at a cost of several thousand dollars for analysis) or it's illegal to burn it in a motor vehicle.

I'm not making this up!

Don'tcha just love bureaucracies?

Is this for real, or just another money grabbing fad that is now surfacing due to the fuel situation around the world?

I personally know of at least several folks doing what the guy in CA is doing. However, the best route to go is still to convert your car to burn Natural Gas. It's less than .70 cents a gallon here in Utah and there are literally hundreds of cars here on the road including all of SLC's "City Cars and Trucks" and all the Busses. Conversions at loocal places cost about 3 grand which is quickly off set by the low cost of CNG here in this state. There are over 40 fill places between Rock Springs, WY. and St. George, UT plus many more scattered about so filling up is a breeze. Honda is offering several of its models with factory dorect gas conversions. Can't find a Natural Gas fill point... just flip the switch on your dash to run on gasoline till the next CNG fill point.

I paid 3.439 a gallon here at Smiths yesterday....

It's up to $3.85 at the cheapest and $3.95 - $4.00 at the highest for 87 octane around here.

It's a really lousy time to be a boat salesman; my neighbors with boats are considering whether to even get them wet this summer.

Interesting that prices in Hawaii are the same as some places on the US mainland. I'd have thought that the cost of shipping the stuff out into the middle of the Pacific from distribution points on the mainland would instantly whack a significant amount on the retail price. Is it subsidised in any way?

A few years ago I went on holiday to the Outer Hebrides (a group of islands about 50 miles off the west coast of Scotland). I'd been forewarned to fill the tank up to the gunwhales before driving onto the ferry, and was glad I did. I can't remember what the actual price was now, but it was a clear third higher than filling up on the mainland. About the only consolation for the locals is that distances on the islands are tiny compared to the amount of driving a typical mainland driver does, and so they don't need to buy that much. Incidentally, those islands were full of rusty old cars which had been abandoned by the roadside. The salty air out there eats car bodies very quickly, and once the cars become unroadworthy, the cost of shipping them back to the mainland to scrap is such that hardly anyone is willing to pay it.

Granted, it is the best way to go, but with N/G conversions like this, isn't the tank supposed to be externally mounted on or at the end the vehicle?

I can see it working great for pickups and trucks due to the tank being placed in the bed, but for cars.......???

Nampa is at $3.599 and Boise is at $3.579 .. SLC gas has always been cheaper ... Back in 1970, one can find gas in SLC for $.229/gallon while us folks up in E. Idaho were paying $.289 for the same stuff - which was good ol' lowlead regular and 93 octane premium was $.319 for those mega muscle machines.

Kinda sickening, aint it??

Hell, it wouldn't even be so bad to go back to how prices were just 3 or 4 years ago.

I have lots of gasoline price changer sign sketches for Love's Country Stores, EZ-GO and a couple others. For years I've had the habit of inserting then-current gasoline prices on the drawings.

At this time 3 years ago, people in Lawton were paying $2.19 per gallon for 87 octane. 4 years ago the price was $1.75 per gallon. In 2001 we were paying $1.27 per gallon.

This morning our prices jumped from $3.64 per gallon to $3.79 per gallon. I know I'm not making 3 times as much money as I was in 2001.

Ours just jumped too. Yesterday at the corner Chevron:

$3.69/gal Regular
$3.79/gal Mid-Test
$3.89/gal Premium

For about the last month or so we've actually been cheaper than SoCal. Normally 'Vegas prices tend to be higher than SoCal's.

Cost me $2.75 to top off the scooter yesterday. Damn!

We'll all be on bicycles and scooters before long.

Or maybe we'll just be hoofing it. Should be interesting to see what it will cost to heat a home later on this fall and winter. Sell some possessions to pay the bill.

I know the point you are making but you shouldn't have to make 3x the income to offset a 3x increase in gas. If your gas spending was 10% of your spending (when it was 1/3 the price), if you are still spending the same on everything else gas will now be 25% of your spending and your total spending is now 20% higher. Theoretically you would need to increase your income 20% to offset this assuming you were spending everything you earned before. If you were saving before, you now are saving less.

On that HHO modification, exactly how does it increase efficiency? You are using engine power to release the hydrogen from the water. Are they saying that adding Hydrogen Gas to the combustion chamber will increase the burn efficiency of the regular fuel? If it really does add that much efficiency, I'm surprised the automakers don't offer this as a production item (as it will raise their CAFE calculation without very much cost).
