Over here in the States, ours is at $5.85/hr with an increase next month to $6.55/hr. Its only $1.53 to the Euro (versus nearly $1.60 a few weeks or so ago) and it is only $1.95 to a GBP (was over $2.00) and we once again are beating the Canadian Dollar (a mere $.97...such a bargain). Okay with all of these gains I'm SURE the price of gas will be plumiting back to pre 1995 rates! The Saudis contend the world has adequate oil supply and that the high prices we're paying are totally unjustified. The Saudis say they'll start pumping oil from their 500,000 barrel per day Khursaniyah field and may increase output at other fields. A G-8 nations meeting focused on spiking commodities prices. Leaders said the rampant inflation in food and fuel commodities is now posing a greater risk to the world economy than the credit crisis that resulted from the stupidly mismanaged real estate market. A growing level of attention and anger is getting directed toward commodities speculators. Currently, speculators can pay a tiny amount to option a futures contract. They do that instead of putting up all the money to cover the bet up front. Lots of traders just buy options, but it helps jack up the price of commodities like oil, corn and rice anyway. Politicians in various countries, including the United States, are now calling for new rules or other limits to be imposed on speculators. Gasoline here in my town is now $3.75 per gallon for 87 octane. I just thankful I picked a car that gets 37.7 MPG over that mustang. And my car's a convertable too. :-p It's not a hybrid either, that's just normal gas. Thoigh I am driving what at seems is like a fancy Golf cart. The 600 had a 598cc,4stroke, aircooled twin up in the front end, rode on 10inch tires and only cost $1200 bucks new in dealers. You might say that gave VW's stiff competition in economy, but the little bug was more popular and Japanese inports wasn't too well accepted back then. Presumably he's the only station in the area which hasn't run out and is out to make a fat profit on the stuff he has left. Imperial gallon = 4.56 litres; US gallon = (IIRC) 3.8. To be honest I can't understand why the media insists in translating petrol prices into gallons: the stuff has been sold in litres here for around 20 years now. I can only guess it's because fuel economy figures for cars are still expressed in MPG and so people want that reference point. But even there miles per litre strikes me as a simpler measure, and as a litre is the same everywhere, one which doesn't introduce any possibility for misunderstanding. In rough terms, 10 MPL is about average, 5 is a guzzler and 15 is seriously efficient.  |  IP: Logged
